Hi Bob,   Sorry to hear you are selling Ragtime. It's pristine. I was looking at the pictures and noticed the white plastic "chafe protectors/self jib skirting" devices you have on the forward stations. Did you purchase them? Is so from whom? If you fabricated them yourself can you describe the process?

Rich, those are a singlehander's thing but I don't know why crewed boats don't have them, to avoid sending someone down to the low side to skirt the genoa.  They work perfectly - much better than rollers.

We make them out of 1/4" StarBoard.  The tricks are to make the top radius tighter than the bottom, position them at the very tip of the stanchions, and buy your genoas with a bit higher clew (they don't work with deck-sweepers).  I lash them on tight with waxed sailmakers' twine and then tape them over.

Even our lady skippers call them "skirt-lifters."  Not patented so knock yourself out.

As to selling Ragtime! I'm certifiably nuts.  I've been working on the inventory list all day - man I've put a lot into that boat over the years!

Great looking boat wish we were ready to buy a 92 this summer.  What will you be asking for your 92?

I bought Ragtime! in 2002 by joining the predecessor to this forum, waiting patiently and then pouncing when a good boat came up for sale.  Hull #18, then named Acrobat, was in MA.  After seeing many photos and exchanging a few e-mails with the owner, I had the boat surveyed back there and then shipped out to CA "sight-unseen."

She was sold exactly the same way, to a buyer who joined this forum about two years ago, waited patiently, etc.  I will let the buyer introduce herself if she wants to.

I'm not going anywhere and will continue to check in here.  I have many photos of projects I've done to Rags (some that worked and some that didn't), and I want to continue to support all of you.

So... With what boat could one possibly replace a beloved J/92?  The next boat is an Alerion Express 38 - not the upscale daysailer with the huge cockpit, wheel etc.-  but one of only eight built to Carl Schumacher's original design.  She's dark blue like Rags, absolutely gorgeous, and I think she'll be a worthy successor to a wonderful J/92 that made me look like a much better sailor than I really am.

Congrats, glad it worked out for you.  My wife and I are in the same position you were when you bought your J 92.  Currently sail a J 27 and love it! Just want a little more space but performance similar to our 27...

Bob - Can't thank you enough for all your support over the years, we are going to miss you and Rags on the bay, but the Alerion sure is a sweet ride.

Bill - FWIW, have sailed J24's, J80's, J35's and so forth here in San Francisco and in Long Beach (California) where I still have partial ownership of a Shields 30.  Nothing beats the balance of our J92 (hull #65) and for overall big fun on the water.  Full rig, asymmetrical chute, tiller, open transom, fin keel with a bulb, traveler on the deck, safe ... will pause there as I just convinced myself to figure out how to go for a ride tomorrow - do you think anyone will catch on if my calendar reads "off-site training?"

Be well,

David
