After 17 years, the drum surface of the Harken 40.2ST jib winches on my J92s is quite worn and smooth. Sheets are sliding even with many turns. Has anyone replaced the drums with new spare parts? Or tried upgrading to Antal XT40 winches? They seem at least as good as Harken, but more reasonably priced

Hi,

Here in the Netherlands is a company, named "De Lijnenspecialist". And they advertised with the folowing service, Maybe you can translate the page by using Google Lens.

There might be more companies over the world who can do that.

Kind Regards,
Geert.

Ovviamente dopo dovrai trattare superficialmente tutto il tamburo.

Dear Elio,
the site advised by Geert is actually the dutch version of premiumropes.com, that many of us know for their splicing tutorials (and their quality).
Here is the link to the same advised page, but in premiumropes:
The solution seems interesting, it all depends on its cost.
I wonder if there are other closer companies offering the same service, in Italy (or closer to you). Please let us know.
Ciao,
Paolo

A few years ago I sent my Harken winch drums (off my J92S #66) to Harken in Wisconsin to get the drums refinished.  The cost was reasonable.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Indeed, Antal XT40 drilling pattern is different than Harken, so this replacement is not an option for me. Replacing just the drum with a spare seems possible in principle. The Italian representative provided me with a quote for the old Harken 32 (halyards) at around 270 EUR each, but the spare drums for the 40 are not available anymore. Premiumropes does indeed provide the re-gripping service (but not the re-anodizing, although they say generally not needed in their experience). The cost is 175 EUR each, ex shipping. Something to think about over winter...

I got Harken Radials as replacements.  Yeah. They’re pricey but the Radials rarely ever encounter an override. Which is by design. Lost multiple races with the old Harkens with a miserable ill-timed overrides. Gah! 😩. I mounted my new winches with G10 backing plates on the insideSuper easy to service.
