Hull #162 (I think or 164) from 2002

I know there som threads about bushings and rudders… but can’t really find my answer.

* I believe our rudder blade is wet - there’s some blisters on the blade - anyone know what material used in the blade? I assume first step is to drill a hole in the bottom to see if water cones out?

* When im at it I planned to get rid of the play in the rudder - I removed the blade, stock and lower bushing (Derlin I assume) - but im not sure if it’s the bushing that's worn or if it's the aluminum shaft?

I saw some people change to Jefa bushings - but that includes a bit of glass work which won’t be possible.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

Here is a plan for new lower an upper rudder bushings which worked well in my J92 hull #10 Jack Flash. Remove the old bushings gkue it in with white sikaflex. Problem is to find a machine workshop to produce the b´new bushings.

Thanks for the reply -

im not sure we have the same construction - my lower bushing is spherical and held in place by an aluminum hat.

I found a store who sells them - but not sure a new bushing will help with the play due to the worn rudder shaft?  I assume your shaft wasn’t worn?

I could pop the bushing out from the hat by rotating it 90deg, see attached image.

Hi All,

Since I'm here in Rhode Island, I used Applied Plastics Technology, which (I think) did the original J/92 rudder bearings.  The problem, if you want to call it that, is that a few thousands of an inch makes a huge difference, the difference between tight and loose almost.  They made me the ring on top, the lower bearing and the upper bearing and I had them make a 3rd  3/4" high upper bearing to go with the top bearing because I had to refabricate the ridge that held the upper bearing up and I made it a little longer/deeper...  Fabricated out of 3" delrin tube.  I actually have a mold to create that ridge in the tube also made out of delrin.

I used the rudder diagram above but had to change the numbers slightly for my exact shaft diameter and hole diameter... As I said, a few thousands of an inch makes all the difference.  One bearing was alittle tight, so I took a 2" piece of PVC pipe and velcro'ed a piece of sand paper to it and spun it inside a bit... hated to do that and ruin the nice smooth inside finish ...

It worked great.  I'm going to take the rudder out this fall to see how everything did wear wise.

My two rudder bushings were very used, building date 1999, thus steering was not precise.

By measuring the diameter of the rudder shaft you can check if my plan fits , when not, actualize it with your own measurment or bring the rudder directly to machinery shop though they can pick up their own measurements and transfer it to their machinery to produce the 2 new Torlan bushings.

If the rudder shaft is not even, make it even with fine sand paper.

Maybe Vesconite is a good choice as material for these bearings.
Don't use nylon because it is swelling if soaked in water.

I have a piece of Delrini Stock that I got from McMasterCarr that will definitely work for a bushing if machined correctly.  I may still have some bushings or even a slice of a bushing that would be the diameter of the rudder shaft.  It cost me $800 to have 2 sets of bushings cut (upper and lower).  The machine shop wanted $1200.  We settled lower but it was crazy expensive.
