We just had the latch to our head door come apart. I imagine this is the same part on all similar sized J boats. Does anyone know where to source a replacement? I can’t seem to find anything close at West Marine, Defender, or Fisheries supply. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim.

Thanks John, I’ll try chasing those part numbers down

However, it seems as though the forward head door in our boat is a left hand out. It is on the port side, latch is aft, hinges forward, door swings out into the forward state room. I might have my goodness, terminology confused, though

I just read through the Southco catalog/website. It turns out the door latches are outrageously specific, each number designates a very specific part of the product. As close as I can tell, if anyone else is interested, part number for the forward head of a J 46 is.
MA-01-420-01-10. I’ve got a request in with the company, and will update to find out more.

Well, we just had our forward head door latch fall apart too. An internal spring broke.

Has anyone figured out where to get these from? All online sources seem to say a lead time of 90-days, which tells me they don't actually have them in stock.

BTW, the left/right handedness of the latch can be swapped easily (at least in some cases). I just swapped the orientation of the aft cabin door latch to use on the forward head as a temporary fix. The privacy lock parts have to be swapped from one side to the other (along with a small spring). Once that was done, it worked as the forward head latch in the correct orientation.

Hi David, Jim Fletcher here. J 46 owner. We met in Port McNeil, I believe. I wrote that piece below, that you pasted onto this thread, and I may have cited a specific model before I fully understood the fit system they use at at Southco. It takes a bit of deciphering.  These latches are the MA series, and are very nicely made.  In any case, here is a link to the start page where you can go for that door cassette fixture. They are made in England, and they are made to order so it takes about six weeks, at least it did for me.   Good luck.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim, yes we did meet in BC - just before we bought our J/46.

Thanks for the info. I found a place that carries these in stock and also helps you sort out the ‘handedness’ of the latches with a diagram on their product page. The only questions I have is which style . I think it is the Nova style as that more closely matches what we have. The Portofino is very, very similar but doesn't seem to have the handle curve that ours has. But it is hard to tell from their photos. The southco web catalog isn’t much help either as all the photos are so similar between the two styles.

Anyway, I called them and they stock them both. So I will check again with them to figure out which one we have and place an order soon.

Here’s the place and a link to the Nova style:

Hi David, I hope, and assume you are as happy with your J46 as we are. In the seven years we’ve owned her. I think I’ve only seen one boat that I would even consider trading for. I’m about 95% sure that that nova style handle is what we have. Good luck and cheers, Jim.

Southco's "catalog" gives a good overview, including how to figure out what is in or our, left or right.  Seehttps://files.southco.com/static/Literature/ma-sd.en.pdf  for part of that catalog.

FYI, for anyone else needing one in the future. fpmarine.com out of Florida does indeed keep these in stock and on the J46, they are the Nova style. Got a new one from them in less than a week. They carry all the "handedness" variants in stock as well.
