Afternoon everyone,

I just bought a new CNC machine and will be looking to make some parts and wanted to ask the group if there was anything specific "we" might like to see?  For instance I know people have needed to source fair leads, station base and myself I need new locker latches as most of mine have broken.

I can work on making some sets of items and determine some pricing if there was a list of things our boats need.

I can manage keeping track of the items and perhaps even a priority list of the demand is there.

Talk to you all soon,

Owen

Wow that is a great offer Owen!

I would be interested in some replacement J/46 stanchion bases.  I do not have the specs but others may.

Thank you!

Bernie

Hi - If you can shoot me a photo so I can confirm they are the same as my 44.

They would be one piece verses the casted version - but I'll generate a model for people to see before we make them.

Here you go Owen.  I zoomed in and cropped it for you.  The base is round – it just appears a bit like an oval because of the zoom.

J/46 stanchion base.

Thx

Wow,

I'm in.   I just don't know what I am going to need yet.  my gut is about everything.   I'll stay tuned and see what others.    On stanchion bases, hull #6 has the cast seagulls.  Pic attached.

Great offer Owen. Thanks!

I’m with Dennis, to paraphrase: I definitely need CNC’d parts, I’m just not yet sure what those are. :-)   What materials can you work in?

Bernie, As for stanchion bases, you might check Garhauer, if you haven’t already. I can buy stanchions from them for my J/42, but I’m not sure if they supplied the bases.

Hi Ed,

As I get set up I'd like to stay primarily in Aluminum to be kind to the machine.

I would plan to hard anodize parts.

As we figure out a product path we can evaluate.

Owen,  and All

I was wondering if Owen ever got his Aluminum CNC going?     I noticed yesterday that I have a cracked stanchion base.  It like the one pictured above,  which I believe is the cast AL Goiot with lug that hooks into toe rail.    From other post, I noted that Rig Rite has new old stock listed on their website.   But they are nearly $500 each now.

So, I am wondering if anyone had any luck with industrial adhesives (McMaster Carr).   Or has anyone attempted  or tig / mig welding a repair?     Also, I know there were a couple J 40 salvaged last year and parted out?   Any idea where the parts went?

Any other ideas, for Alum route?   I 've read here that some have begun transion to SS, but need to adjust mounting.    I'd like to exhaust a direct replacement first, if possible.

Hi Dennis,

I am up and running I have a few projects in the pipeline but this one does seem to have demand and I probably could have done a better follow up to the photos above.

I'm confident we can beat $500.00 a piece with the primary driver being the volume we make.

If you, or someone else had one that you could send me for a model (I have a 44 so not this one) I'll use it as a base (pun intended). What we can also do is look at common failure modes like cracking along the fastener line and see what improvements we can make to not have it happen again.

If someone had one they can send me "short term" I can start it relatively soon. The other option is for you or someone to send me one at the end of the season and we can do it then.  Either way I'll look and see if there is a "kit" we can build with new fasteners if needed and total numbers etc... I just need one.

Here to support,

Owen

Owen,
Found the base that I have and remember that the stanchion hole had been bored out.

It’s a little over an 1”. I think it was .75” normally.
Do you still want it??

Owen,
Here is the spec description found on line.    And some photo's of my newly discovered crack.  Guess the survey missed this.   Mine use the plastic inserts.

Goiot Toerail Mounted Stanchion Base: Goi 810-8:
Buy

Toerail-mounted Stanchion Base adds additional support to Stanchion. Triangular-shaped Stanchion Base has lug that locks into Toerail slot and attaches to deck with (2) 6mm (1/4") FH screws on 57mm (2 1/4") centers. Clear anodized, cast aluminum Base has 6mm tapped hole for screw (available separately) to secure stanchion, and 27mm hole for Stanchion. Includes plastic stanchion sleeve, making it suitable for use with 25mm and 1" stanchions. Unit is (maximum) 3" (77mm) high x 3 3/16" (80mm) wide.

Thanks

Thanks for the photos.

Is this the stanchion base at your gate?

please do me a favor, the one Larry is sending he believes was bored out from 0.750-inches to 1.000-inches. Please go measure both your stanchions at the gate and, a "regular" one further up by the spreaders. What I want to be sure is that there is only one size and not two with the ones at the gate being a larger diameter than that of the "standard" one.

Expecting Larry's to arrive today and I'm going to give to my mechanical designer. We are going on a cruise for a few days but back next week and I can update on status.

Owen,
Sure,  I will be back down there tomorrow. will measure then.  BTW,  my photo  are from base at starboard bow pulpit.   Not boarding gate.

I will look to see if they are different.   My gut, and looking at pics is that they are all the same.

I think maybe the one Larry sent was the one I had given him a couple years ago. I had forgotten that I had the bases bored out to fit the new stanchions I got. Or maybe it was to fit some material between the stainless and aluminum.

Ok,   due to safety concerns, we are racing this summer, I went ahead and procured a replacement base.   Here are some images.     I need to measure my stanchions, but I guess they are 1 inch.    I am sure others will fail, and I am still interested in having some spares.

So I am hoping Owen can make some.

Hi Owen, Dennis,

I have the same stations on my J/40. If making a few extra helps lower the cost for everyone, I could be interested.

Cheers,

Owen,
I looked  my  stanchion and bases.    All stanchions regardless of where they are are 1 inch od at the base.  All the bases are the same.

I would be in for a couple as spares.

Thanks for the confirmation!

Just got back from few days sailing and got the base today.

Will get to modeling this week and then we'll look at cost (AL has gone up significantly with tarriffs) but we can review cost if they are milled and I do have a casting resource I will engage.
