Hello All,

Has anybody installed a Watt & Sea on a J/42?

If so, any guidance for type of mount, location, etc.?

Ed

Hi Ed,  I used to own a J40 #33 Heron Reach.  We sailed her from Bellingham WA to the South Pacific and back with a Watt & Sea.  Worked incredibly well.  I made 2 boxes and mounted them on each side of the transom with a 12 degree angle.  That way it kept the prop as deep as possible and was easy to swap sides when we tacked/gybed.

Good info! Thanks Jerry.  I’m researching mounting options. Thinking that build my own is going to be the best route.  Hadn’t considered swapping sides.

Regards,
Ed

I would advise not to mount it on centerline, to much disturbed water behind the rudder to be effective.  If mounted on one side then on one tack the prop will be at the surface or above, and once again, disturbed water.
I’ll try to find a pic, not sure I have any of the transom after I installed the boxes.

Cheers, Jerry

Roger that. Installation manual does specify off-center, but I thought I would get away with the deep version mounting it only on one side.

That said, I’ll have access to my buddies machine shop in May, and with his help can probably come up with a nice stainless mount with a removable option.

Ed

Watt & Sea has a G10 (?) “wedge” mounting available. Here’s a photo of the installation I did on a J/122. I bought two Watt & Sea “U” receptacles and had G10 (?) mounting points fabricated (port and starboard) to keep the receptacles roughly vertical (and upright fore/aft) when heeled.

Also note the rigging arrangement to raise/lower the unit. The unit’s electrical connection is on the port side of the transom (far left in the photo).

Thanks Scott.

Did you find their removable bracket to be solid? I can’t really tell from the website how it works, but it looks like you’re just sliding a plastic piece into some channels.

Ed

I drilled a hole in one side of the “U” and put a fast pin through both the “V” and the “U” it fit into. No problems with that minor change—the pin obviously kept the V (attached to the W&S unit) from working it’s way up and out of the receptacle.

If you zoom in, you might see the fast pin. Otherwise, I can look for a higher-res photo of the area.

Here’s a higher-res photo of the device at sea. This was from a solo transatlantic passage. You can see the fast pin “head” hiding on the far side of the mounting base. The whiter bits are the W&S V and U. The darker bits are the fabricated G10 base. You can also get a sense of how I had it rigged to lower—with pressure—the unit and to raise it back up. (Rather than relying solely on the rigging, I also used sail ties to hold it upright and to keep it from flopping back and forth in a seaway (the unit has a hinge that pivots port and stbd).

When I moved the unit from one side to the other, I also switched the block & tackle arrangement. I had padeyes mounted as attachment points.

(I also had to “field repair” an electrical problem on the way, so I just used a terminal block (shown starting to rust) and a bungee cord to keep it out of the water (more or less)). Not pretty, but it got me where I wanted to go.

Hope this helps…

I can see the pin in your photo. Nice update. I believe the current version of their removable mount comes with some sort of securing latch/device.
