J46, Loretta, Rudder length

Clipped the end of the rudder on a shoal, and damaged the bottom 14”.  One side of the skin goes down to point I believe is the original length minus the curved bottom which I think was done with fairing compound.  This hull #2 with the shoal keel.  The rudders length was just short of the draft of the keel. (6.2’)

The request is the length of the rudder from hull to tip.

I had to do a bunch of measurements for properly sizing an autopilot ram and I made this as part of that process. Our J/46 is also a shoal draft version.

I needed to break this into two emails because of size limitations so please bear with

 

On our new to us J40 (#82) I’m looking for some help on sourcing some parts, see attached pictures. To wit:

 

1. The latches on the propane and anchor lockers. They are the same size we learned after breaking the one on the propane locker and transferring the anchor locker latch over since we don't presently use it much but would like to replace the broken.

 

2. The small caps that cover the fasteners for the headliner in the forward cabin among others.

 

3. The gasket material for sealing the portholes

Food for thought: Code requires that the propane locker have an actual latch. Not just a pull ring.  (At least so said my surveyor.)

I replaced the pull latch on my J42 with https://www.fisheriessupply.com/perko-rectangular-chrome-flush-ring-pull-0841/0841dp0chr?fsls=ohd. I looked up the dimensions and verified they matched before ordering. Eyeballing it looks the same.

I think for #3 those parts are unserviceable. Check the archives for lengthy discussions about it.

That rocker switch controls a contact shown on the attached picture. It

 allow house to jump motor bank.  The contractor is below with an X thru it.  When you swapped to lithium you can’t tie the positive together between AGMs and lithium.  The notes on the photo are from my demo.   

Just make sure there not tied together all the time, because a long over night sail could kill,the engine bank.

Odd thing about my boat seems to be I can start the engine without turning on either starter battery or house bank … will need to look into that but maybe the rocker switch has something to do with it!

Latch Replacement: 

I went with a Southco latch for both locker doors on the afterdeck of my J/42 (propane and below deck access). Very secure closure and minimizes water ingress.  They have locking and non-locking versions, but I’d need to dig up the part numbers for you.

Headliner Screws: 

I decided to replace those plastic caps by using oval headed screws with countersunk stainless washers.  Nice clean look I think, and much easier to deal with when removing panels. I’m just not a fan of how those plastic caps look.

I did a very similar project with these Perko latches, which were all I could find in Port Townsend, which was where I was when I got around to that project.  

To get them flush requires routing the edge of the hole. Or if you don’t care, they’ll stick up a quarter inch or so.  The alloy T-handles are getting a little corroded after two years. I haven’t even tried the locks since I installed them. (Keys must be in the chart table somewhere…) Given a choice, I think I’d take the Southco ones.  

Crazy that of the five hatches in the cockpit, my 42 came with five different latching (or not) mechanisms.
