I’m packing it in spent the last almost 3 years preparing the boat for the journey, and in the phase of getting rid of all my stuff and came across this, its from my first single hand to the Caribbean it was the only chart I had of it. My father in-law was a big time maritime lawyer. Way back, when I first met my wife my future dad in-law, another lawyer and I took a real long passage I think he took me to get me away from his daughter (yeah that worked out well we’ve been married 46). Glory was the name of the boat it was a 50+’ Hinckley yawl with a black hull I believe a '72 or '73 I know it was pretty new when we took that first journey in '74.
I remember him and I were going to take it down for the winter I was just out of college taking a year between that and grad school so I was like 24/25 I guess that would put it around ’80/'81. Well, he had some kind of big deal come down a weather window opened he drew me up this chart in "Lawyer Hand" said “just don’t get too close to shore you’ll be alright”, and sent me off. There was no gps back then I think it had a Lawrence (is that spelt right?) but never used the thing, had a sextant didn’t use that either I just kept it between 180º and 160º knowing I’d hit something down there, you really can’t get lost in the Atlantic. Made it in a little over two weeks reached the whole way made it to Jost not knowing where the hell I was til the next morning, checked in on the west side of Tortola, then made way over to Peters, was there about 4 days when I found out it was actually Coopers, if you notice an Island he omitted from the chart.
Funny the things you do when you’re young and dumb, but really starting to questioning why I spent close to 20 grand on electronics for Ardent.

Can you share what you mean by “packing it in”?

Your great story reminds me of our early family cruising in the 70’s. We had a Pearson 26 with  9.9 hp outboard. We had Speedo, depth and compass. While inFrankfort Mi, unfamiliar waters, we ate dinner in a Broasted Chicken place and noticed their place mats were a crude chart of the Lake Michigan shoreline north to the straits. That’s all we needed and used. Real charts were expensive and we had just emerged from the first oil crisis and the worst recession since the great depression so we made due. Those early sailing days made me realize how little of all todays fancy gear we really need or use.

A friend tells his story of sailing from Tampa to the Dry Tortugas. He was new to sailing and his boat but a friend convinced him he’d made the trip several times and they’d be fine. About a day out the owner asked him where the charts were; he pointed at his head and said it’s all up here. The owner said that was about the time we started hitting s$&#.

Hi to Everyone

I am in SW Florida and am in the market for a J40 with the shoal draft wing keel version. If you know of anyone who is selling, or may be interested in selling their boat, please feel free to have them contact me by text at 610-745-8988.

Many Thanks

Cheers

Does anyone have recent experience with replacing standing rigging on a J40 who can provide a rough estimate of cost to do, also hopefully broken down between materials and installation?

Thks

This is a 42, and from 2022. But should probably get you in the neighborhood. I ultimately only had them make it and then had a local rigger help me install it for about $1500

Speaking of rod rigging I was over at Baystate sailing equipment the other day talking to Denis the owner, now you guys might not know them but they are the ones who made your rigging if you have rod rigging on a Hall spar. Well the long short of it he said he’s only gonna be doing it for 3 more years and his prices are good. Told him I’d tell you all that and honestly that was about a year ago when he told me so I guess he’s got about a couple years left in him…

I had mine replaced last year and here is the cost. As my boat is in Irvington, there was travel cost, which was actually split with another boat owner who had his rigging replaced at the same time. Not included in the invoice was the cost of the crane, which at $300/hour times 2 (3 hour minimum) plus the cost of the yard help to remove and re-step the mast (total was around $2,500 on top of the rigging cost; so roughly $12,000 without the travel expense.

How about a shallow draft J44 instead?

New England Yacht Rigging replaced my 20+ year old rod rigging with wire for $2100 installed, including tax, in 2021.  I dont remember what the delta for pricing on rod was but i was told it doesnt make that much of a difference for a boat like the J40 and it was just the trendy go fast thing to have in the early 2000s when they had last done the standing rigging.  For what thats worth.  ky...@neyachtrigging.com can do the wire or rod replacement.  Great service and they have a lot of experience.

I should add my rig was already down and this was done over the winter so mast stepping was not part of the rigging replacement
