I am looking to purchase a J40 that would not come with a tender or motor and so looking for any input from the group as to what people are using  ...  i.e., how size tender and motor and any preference in terms of brands

Many Thks

Well, I think you need to think about what your use-case is for the tender and work backward from there.

I’d love to have a small nesting dink, like a PT11, tucked neatly under the boom, but I don’t think it would work for me.  It might be great if you mainly need to row out to a mooring or such.

I figured that I’d need to occasionally go on away missions up to five miles with scuba gear, groceries, fuel cans, bicycle.  And I have. Frequently.  Sometimes over pretty rough cold water.  So I carry a 9-foot RIB with a 9.9 HP motor and external fuel tank.  I love that little workhorse, but there just isn’t any good way to carry it on a J4X. In protected waters, I tow it.  At sea, it rides on the foredeck, in chocks, with the tubes deflated. There is barely room to work around it that way.  Have to hoist it on the hip at night, in anchorages.  At least the electric winches make hoisting the thing an easy, if tedious process.

I also carry a small kayak, which is easier for beach landings, if no significant cargo or crew needs to be hauled.

I am putting the J in storage for the summer in Baja and heading back to my old Ericson 29 up north.  I’ve been thinking about whether I can get by using a SUP as tender?  A lot of adjustments would be needed.

Have fun with this.

I use a F-Rib 330 on our J/42.  It is a rigid inflatable, 10' long, but folds to a very small .9 x .9 x .4 meter bundle.  It rides in a rack just forward of the dodger which does not impact sighlines (much). 20398F4B-9278-4226-8B36-91B2C3D50B52_1_105_c.jpeg
We currently use an electric outboard motor (ePropulsion) which works great for shorter distances (about equiv to a 3.5hp ICE).

I have used an Avon 260 RIB Lite for 18 years.  I believe the Zodiac Cadet 260 RIB is the current replacement.  It rows well, works great with a small outboard and has been ok with 4 people.  The boat folds up into a low profile case for long offshore passages.  I carry it over the main cabin.  Most of the time I carry it on the foredeck. It protects the forward hatch for good ventilation.  At 115# it is easy to hoist onto the foredeck.

Hi
I my J40 I use a Highfield UL260 which fits on the bow of the J40 upside down. For a motor I use a Torqeedo. I didn’t want to have outboard gas on the J40, plus storage is limited. J40 is not a big boat. The battery of the Torqeedo can be charged from the boat battery. The Highfield weighs around 70lbs and I lift it with a spinnaker halyard. The Torqeedo breaks down into three pieces which my wife can hand me over the stern of the J40.
Good luck

Hi

We love our Walker Bay molded folding transom RIB on ConverJence.  Offshore the folded transom nests perfectly in front of the dorades and the painter ties thru the inner forestay tack padeye and across the grab rails aft.  Invisible from the cockpit sightlines and allows forehatch to be cracked.

I would avoid a Torqeedo if you expect to be in saltwater.  Of the 8 outboards we have had it was the least reliable.  They really should come with carbon fiber oars included…
