Well. My head re-install continues to exhibit, albeit minor, leakage at the elbow joint.

I'm contemplating replacement. And as long as doing so, may as well go electric, which was very popular on a prior boat.

So.  Does anyone have a model that they particularly like or dislike for the J/40?  If it matters, this will be in the aft head.

Thanks!

We replaced/upgraded our aft head on our J/46 and we chose the Jabsco Quiet Flush. Quiet is a bit of a misnomer but it’s reliable and is compact in size (but had a full size seat).

We have the fresh water version but it is set up to be switchable to raw water flush (flip a valve and a switch to change over).

We like it well enough we might rip out the vacuum flush in the forward head and just replace it with one of these simpler electric heads (and as a bonus reclaim some space under the Vberth for storage).

Just installed Raritan Marine Elegance in fwd head on my J/42. I like it very much, but doesn’t tuck up to bulkhead as much as I’d hoped, due to the angle that the fiberglass takes as it moves towards the hull.

Not sure of the layout in your boat, but consider how the base of a different toilet will sit/fit into the space when checking measurements.

Not sure how much variation there is in the head between models?  Can anyone confirm that the Jabsco Quiet Flush E2, standard bowl fits in a J/42 aft head? Or doesn't? Yes, I should have taken measurements before I left. (IIRC, I measured for pump clearance when this thread first came around, but didn't consider bowl size... or discharge orientation.)

Looks like I'm driving the Land Yacht down to Mexico for a cargo exchange again this year and I'm seriously considering ripping out the VacuFlush toilet (compact bowl, I'm pretty sure.) It has worked properly no more than 10% of the time and has been an endless source of frustration.

Of course, another option is to just go with a reliable manual-flush model.

Thanks,

I installed a Raritan Fresh Head in the forward head of our J/44 and am quite fond of it. I think an electric head might be nice also, especially for people who are marine head challenged (we race the boat and not everyone on the crew is equally adept with them) - but for anyone who's good at using a marine head the Fresh Head has most of the benefits of an electric (fresh water, strong pump) and fewer parts to fail. I may install an electric in the aft head for racing crew, though :)

Michael and all-

I replaced our old Jabsco manual toilet in our J40's aft head with an electric flush macerator toilet.  I went with the SPX  Aqua T silent Plus (Comfort) which is a full sized bowl (instead of compact) and I will say it is lifechanging.  The kit includes bowl, macerator pump, water supply pump and 3 switch control panel.  The outlet and macerator orientation is flexible (I have the pump pointing forwards in the J40 aft head) and was basically a drop-in installation.  We have had it in for 3 seasons with 0 problems.  Replacement macerator blades (plastic) are $15 and the entire motor-blade asssembly is around $150 (for those considering spare parts).  Highly recommend based on quality, price, performance, and ease of installation.  The only weird thing is the comfort bowl is an inch or 2 taller so the bowl seat height is a little bit higher than the original Jabsco, but its fine and my 4 year old is able to climb up and use it without assistance.

Wanted to add- of all the macerator toilets, this one is the least loud (as opposed to the most quiet...they're all loud).   It is similar in volume to the freshwater pump and significantly quieter than the electric upgrade unit for the jabsco manual toilet.  The loudest function is the rinse water pump, the actual macerator/bowl drain won't wake up your anchorage or friends rafted alongside.

So it seems like there is likely room to install an electric with full sized bowl. A little bit of luxury (maybe even with a bidet!) IIRC, the VacuFlush sits right at the forward edge of the platform, with the hinge end butted against the “wet locker” divider.

Not entirely sure that a manual toilet has fewer moving parts... And I’d probably need to add a macerator for discharge. But I happen to have a brand new one in storage.

I like the idea of not having any working parts buried out in the sail locker. Which is both why the VacuFlush is so quiet and one of the reasons why it is such a pain to work on.

Hmm.
