Everyone,

I wanted to solicit interest in a J/4X Directory.   Here's a link to the J/40 Roster that Al Schreitmueller maintained for years:

I've not come across a similar roster for other J/4X boats.  My thought would be to create something in Google Sheets to archive similar data for J/40, J/42, J/44, and J/46 owners.  I'm willing to create and maintain it, if there's interest.  Since this Owner's Group is already closed to outside web surfers, I assume our privacy would be maintained by the use of a Google Sheet as the platform.

Thoughts?

I like the idea. And maybe one field for notes such as typical cruising grounds or where a boat is based.

Ed

Just a clarification: this group is open to the public. Anyone can read posts and anyone can join. There is no moderating.

Hi folks:

I like the concept of a directory, but the long term issue is who will maintain it?  I used to maintain a webpage for the J/42 class until the hosting service was discontinued.  It was not much work but like anything required constant updates.  So I really like the idea of using a Google Sheet that everyone can maintain the information themselves.

But how secure can we make the Google Sheet?   Our J/4x group is actually public so anyone can read it including any links to a Google Sheet.  You need to be a member only to reply or post new messages.  So we would need to either password protect the sheet or provide a hidden link to members when they join or request it.  Is this something Tom Keffer, the group’s moderator, would be willing to do?  Perhaps there is another alternative to securing it?

Bernie, I remember that page you maintained. Wasn't it viewable by the public?

One can protect a Google sheet so it is viewable by only named people or a Google group. However, right now, anyone can join our group, so, in theory, anyone could see the sheet by just joining the group.

We could require approval to join the group. That's the way we did it back when we were hosted by Yahoo groups. I didn't feel it necessary with Google groups because their anti-spam system is so good, but we could add it back.

If we go that direction, I could really use another moderator for the J/4x group to avoid delays. When we were on Yahoo, sometimes it took weeks before I could get back to someone.

Since the J/40 Directory was already online here: https://j40sailors.com/owners/, I assumed it would be ok to use it as a test-bed for a broader J/4X version.   I converted the pdf into a GoogleSheet, and added a couple more columns, including boat class, cruising area, and finally one for status.

Below is the GoogleSheet version:

I set the protection of the spreadsheet to "off", so anyone can update their own information if they choose to do so.  Again, I'm willing to populate/maintain the Directory, and Steve Babcock volunteered to help.  To get a sense of the scale of the data, we can use the production numbers from the J/Boats website:
J/40: 86 -- Done.
J/42: 77
J/44: 68
J/46: 35
       266
Having an initial cut with the J/40 data gets us 1/3rd of the way there.

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Joe

Everyone,

Since we're trying this in a self-updated mode, I added a new column at the far right for "Last Update".   If you're either entering a new boat or just validating your info, please enter the date into that cell.  For the owners who entered a new boat today, I've added that value for you.

Tom, when I check "Group info", it doesn't show the number of members.   Do you have access to that info?   On other groups where I'm the owner, Google shows the number of members.  I'm just thinking of gauging it against the 266 J/4X boats to get  a sense of the number of owners we're reaching.
