Hi Everyone!

I'm so excited to be taking over ownership of "Spindrift". She is beautifull and I will be phrf racing her Thursdays nights in "Can One Series" on Western Long Island Sound out of New Rochelle NY. Along with some mild cruising and day sailing as well. In the spring I will be sailing her down to New Rochelle which is about  150 NM and can't wait! My parents owned "Hound" in the website pictures when I was in highschool so I am very familiar and have been looking for the model for some time now.

One of the first upgrades I would like to make is to add a traveler control to the boat as it's original without control lines. Does anyone know the make and model of the original traveler? I would prefer not to have to replace the track if possible. I have an idea how I would like to set it up but if anyone knows the original equipment brand and specs or has some pictures of how they set there's up without changing the track it would be great.

Thanks!

Frank

Hi Frank, congratulations!

I went to do what you describe but Rigrite (https://www.rigrite.com/A-Main/hardware_M.php) did not have the parts (although they were listed).  I ended up replacing the travelver and adding a new car with sheaves for the control lines. The track was easier to install than I thought.  I went with Harken for both the track and the car (windward sheeting). You can use the existing track holes because of Harken's sliding bolt system. The track sits slightly higher than the original and interfered with my cockpit cushions but the result was otherwise worth it.  I can look to see if I can find the parts list/ordering info from Harken if you want.

Hi Frank,

My original traveler was made by Fico, from Australia. It was the pin version too. I replaced it with Harken this summer. Here’s a phot of the Harken with some temporary line.

Good luck!

Jeff

Surprised nobody mentioned the Harken self cleating traveler.  I had one on my J-30.

Thanks everyone! I was able to get the Fico part I was looking for from Rig Rite to make it a 3:1 purchase. I also got some new Sheaves as the original ones are a little dried up. I will be keeping the floating end stops to use when I am daysailing and have company so I can slack the traveler and make room for the cushions. see the diagram below as to the way I am installing. Eventually I can replace the track and center car but for now this is the most economical fix that still gives me controls and doesn't cost $1,000 in upgrades. I belive this is the way my parents J28 track was set up but I'm trying to find a picture of that set up.

Thanks again!harken traveler.png
