Hey Geoff.
Thanks for bringing me to the tent.

We are just completing the acquisition of our J-28. You listed me as owner of hull #69 but I am not sure where this number came from. The actual data is:

Hull# 23
Name: Matangi
Year: 1986
Port: East Hampton, NY
Owners: Bill Tucker & Nelson Garcez

I will update with more details like sail inventory and other info once I've been able to put my head around everything.

Quick question: I see two hulls #6. Is this correct?

Thanks

Nelson

Welcome to the group, I repaired your data entry.   I am not sure how we ended up with two #6’s (Caprica and Blue J).

Thanks for updating.

Another question: According to J/Boat there were 75 hulls made but you refer to 71 on the site.

And why don’t you add owners e-mails on the owners list?

Safe winds,

Nelson

I am not sure where 71 came from.  I updated it to 75.  We don’t include emails on the owner list because it is a publicly accessible webpage.  The google group is available if owners and others interested in the boat want to interact.

There are different total production values, even in the official documentation.  See attached as an example.  In my experience, the J-Boats documentation was iffy at best.  If you look at the owners manual the forestay pin-to-pin is listed at something like 52'...kinda hard when the J measurement for our J/28 is 34'
J-28 Specifications.pdf

The story of the hull numbers was partially due to me.  I bought my J-28 (hull #71) in 1996.  J-Boats, then fledgling, website listed that 68 were built, so I called them and told them I owned hull 71, so they bumped it up to 71 built.  At some point someone with hull 75 must have done the same thing.  Funny thing is the person I spoke to at the time (I think it might have been Alan Johnstone) said that Hall Spars records showed 74 rigs built.  So either their numbers were wrong too, or there was a J-28 built without a Hall rig.

Thanks Kurt. That is an amazing story.

And it appears that we have two #6 hulls. Total mistery.

Anyway we are a small and happy family.

Cheers,

Nelson

- Hull# 25

- Year built 1987

- Boat Name - Coba

- Hailing Port   [optional]

- Owners Name(s) David Smith

- Sail inventory - Like new full batten mainsail with Strong Track. 3 headsails and an assymetrical spinnaker.

- Comments - I bought boat in June 2022 and transported it to Houston. It is a shoal draft(is this rare?). While mast was down it was painted, lights replaced with LEDs and all new standing/running rigging replaced and Strong Track added for mainsail.  Schafer roller furling replaced an old Harken unit. All new Garmin instruments and Garmin chart plotters. New RayMarine 3000 autopilot. I am currently adding a Dometic 16K air conditioner. I wanted a fun boat that was fast yet had some interior space for an old sailor to rest at the dock during bad weather days.
