Hi All -

The original thru hulls on the J28 transom (for cockpit drains, manual bilge pump, and engine exhaust) were fiberglass tubing, glassed on the inside, flush with the transom on the outside, except for the engine exhaust which extended 2-3” out from the transom.  A survey found some dampness in the transom core attributed to water entering through hairline cracks around these tubes where they exit (no sealing flange on the outside).  The surveyor recommended sealing in some manner.  In 2019 all fittings were replaced with SS thru hulls (see attached SFAX_transom_1.jpg).  New engine thru hull is a Groco HTH 2000S, 2" ID.

The original exhaust thru hull extended 2-3” out from the transom (see SFAX_transom_2.jpeg).  This image shows new cockpit and pump thru hulls, original exhaust.

Recently there has been some soot accumulation on the transom.  I’m trying to determine if this accumulation is an issue with the engine or whether the flush fitting (and I think larger diameter) is too close to the transom allowing soot to recirculate and deposit. There must have been a reason original J28 exhaust extended out from the transom. The engine doesn’t show any appreciable smoke, runs smoothly, but has had no major overhaul since I’ve owned it (2003).

I’m wondering if anyone has replaced the engine exhaust thru hull or has experienced soot accumulation on the transom. I’ve temporally inserted a short piece of PVC pipe into exhaust outlet to see if soot accumulation decreases.

Any insight appreciated.

Best for Labor Day weekend sailing!

Hull # 62 is still all original, no soot problem.  Admiring your sides.  Have you painted them?  If so, recommended coating?

Thanks,

Steve

Most transom mounted exhausts that I see, not just J-28, extend a few inches out.  It would also help avoid sooty dribbles staining below the exhaust from dirty water.  My new-to-me J-28 has been well kept and the Yanmar  has no significant smoke at up to cruise rpm.  But, I do get a bit of black when it first fires up, which I had with the Yanmar in my T30 also, but it clears right up.  So, a little black from the exhaust might well be in the raw water to stain the transom if it didn’t drip off the edge of the pipe.
