Although I’m not a current J/28 owner, it is a boat that I have been considering as an “upgrade” to my current boat (S2 27). These two boats are similar in spirit but the J/28 has a couple of things I feel are missing on my S2 (I have true two-foot-itis!).

The best part of the S2 is the giant cockpit, and any replacement needs to have a spouse-approved 4-person cocktail cruise space when sailing. Is there someone on this list in/near Annapolis that has a J/28 that we can look out to validate the cockpit is what we are looking for?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg,

I’m not in Annapolis but I’m sure someone in this group is. I will say the cockpit on the J 28 is one of the best cockpits you can find for the size boat. I just recently can from a Cal 28-2 with a very similar T shape but it just isn’t as nice. The helmsmen's area is huge and it’s built right to the edge of the railing which makes it really comfortable. Passengers in front of the traveler can also sit in the cockpit or a little higher on the railing  and lean up against the life lines. J boat cockpits are the best in my opinion and they brought as much of the J/40 cockpit into the J /28 as they could for the size. Also the 40 in wheel makes it easy to steer from many positions. I also love having the main sheet near the helm station for single handling. Sorry for the long response but hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the quick response. Although I have never owned a boat with a wheel, I would like a boat where I can drive standing (since I sit all day at work), and to your point the large wheel that allows to sit outboard and see the telltails, as well as several standing positions, looks very appealing to me. That separates the J/28 from many other boats that have small wheels and would probably do better with a tiller.

Greg,

I am not in Annapolis either but join in what Frank said about the cockpit, the wheel, and single handling.  It's all good with the possible exception of meal time on a cruise with more than two aboard.  You can always remove it and stow it temporarily if that is a concern.

Sandy
