Do any other J-28 owners happen to have a PSS dripless shaft seal? It has been a very nice feature on this boat for the 4 years I’ve had the boat, but it is now leaking quite a bit, dribbling a stream, not a spray or drip, when in gear. There’s no leakage at all when stationary. I can see the stream of water coming back under the engine when in gear, but inspecting from the side, there’s no slinging or spraying, that I’d expect if the leak was at the carbon face seal. If others have been here before what was the diagnosis? I always try to understand what I’m facing, before either tackling a DIY or handing it to a yard to empty my bank account.

Couple thoughts:

1. Burp the bellows to flush any debris between rotor and bellows

2. More likely the bellows resistance to compression weakens over time. One possible solution is to remove set screws, turn the collar 1/16 of turn (to expose new shaft), and compress the bellows a bit further. Use new set screws and add backup set screws on top.

3. It may be time for another bellows replacement.

Jason,
Good idea on the compression. Do you recall when that bellow was installed?  PSS says 5 years nominally for replacement.   I haven’t gone thru all the records yet.

Brad,
The bellows dates to April 2017.  It was the first replacement after the initial install in 2009.  So it is likely due.
