Hi there,

I need to replace my backstay lowers and I've found out the system on our boat is quite different from a few others at the SSA club (the boat is a #400). The lower cables are connected to the top cable via 1 foot of lashing [Photo is attached].
The rigger is quite puzzled by this set up.

Any clue on whether looks alright / similar to others, and if not how to correct it?

Thanks,
Gianleo

Thanks quite common setup albeit looks like you have some twists.  You can use that line to adjust the gross tension.  More in breeze less in light air.

If you only do Thursday nights…with no load on you main sheet or boom and with the backstay blocks all the alway up…pull that line firm and then ease it a small amount so it’s just getting to the point that it’s not pulling at all then tie it off and forget about it for the season.  You don’t want it so loose that the backstay doesn’t to anything when pulled on.

you also should replace that line every few years.

Conversely…I take my backstay off every time I launch to make it easier with the crane.

Hi Gianleo,

This looks similar to the setup on our boat (#484).  The reasoning behind it is that you want the backstay length to be adjustable.   When you put a lot of tension on the shrouds (prebending the mast for heavy air) you will need to tighten up the backstay to maintain the same amount of adjustability you had with less shroud tension and a straighter mast.  You can more easily do that by tightening the lashing than by adjusting the turnbuckles at the deck level.

In the photo, it looks like the lashing doesn't go through the shackle connecting the two lowers.  Running it through the shackle will make it easier to adjust.

Eric

thank you Eric, JR and Jacob,

this makes sense now - i think the tuning guide goes into details on shrouds tension but less clear on the backstay. so, very glad i posed the question!
i'll replace the cables and lashing keeping the same set up then.
see you on the water soon!

To add to the J22 Monday morning Q&A session. Do you need a Loos PT-1 or PT-2 tensioning gauge for J22? Thanks!

You will need a PT-1.  That is what the North and Quantum tuning guides reference.  PT-2 is made for heavier gauge wire.
