The purpose of this mailing list is for me and Flor to keep you informed of interesting developments in J-L283 origins research and for anyone else to share their thoughts, findings or questions with the group. All men in this lineage descend from one man who lived 3700 BC.

One child lineage of this man is represented by a single Armenian from Harpoot. The other lineage, called J-Z622, comprises all other men in J-L283 and appears to have migrated to Europe by 3400 BC, where it subsequently splits into J-YP91 and more prolific J-Z600.

The ancient samples found, while confirming various lineages of J-Z622 were in Croatia by 1600 BC and Sardinia by 1200 BC, do not shed much light into the initial migration to Europe which seems to have occurred two millennia beforehand.

At the time of this writing, a predicted J-L283 (so far confirmed J-M102) has been found in a slightly order context in Northern Serbia. The reason why we predict him to be J-L283 is that this is the only lineage of J-M102 so far found in ancient samples in Europe at such an early date - also conforming to what we expect based on modern distribution.

Prior to this find, the oldest ancient J-L283 sample was found in Kudachurt in the North Caucasus, Kabardino-Balkaria, dated to 1800 BC. On the other side of the Caucasus there is an ancient sample from Lake Sevan, Armenia dating to 1100 BC.

I have established a J-L283 Research Fund to pay for tests for people who may not otherwise be able to afford it and whose sample appears likely to advance research to answer the fundamental questions:

Approximately where did J-L283 reside during the long bottleneck between 7700 and 3700 BC?
By which route did J-Z622 migrate to Europe?
What is the nature of the connection to Armenians - is the J-L283* Armenian man a remnant or a back-migration? (i.e. is he a distant cousin who stayed behind or could he represent a later migration from Europe back to W Asia)
Where did the earliest branches of J-Z622 live and migrate to within Europe (mostly J-Z600 lineages that rapidly diversified during the first 1000 years).
