checking existing directory

hi, i'm trying to do checking on folders that already in the root directory. but i failed to do so. What i'm really trying to do is, I have this dropdown list with 4 value (e.g A,B,C,D) and i have 2 folders inside Memo folder that is (e.g A, B). So if i choose A in dropdown list, it will lead to A folder ~/Memo/A. so there is no folder C, i want to create the folder but 1st i want it to check first either the folder is exist or not, if not it will lead me to Memo folder again and user can create the new Folder there. Can someone try to help me. Thank you
