seems like preenFM3 would be more fun anyways. different character than any yamaha FM synth esepcially vintage FMs like dx11/7 etc but a much more inviting interface with a free au/vst plug in editor if one feels inclined.

I speculate that the form factor is to keep price low. There are quite a few options out there to create patches, and with the USB host input you can connect dedicated controllers.
Exactly how that latter integration will work we have yet to see, but I assume every parameter of every voice will be MIDI controllable.
I imagine the workflow will be to create your patches on Dexed in a daw, then transfer these to the MiniDexed.
I could see this work with well with Push 3 also, making tracks using Dexed, then having the MiniDexed sound module for live performances when running stand alone.

The sound of this tiny synth is really good (when using an optional DAC board) and the one-button operation also works well, but you have to realize that the Minidexed is a preset player plus effects plus performance settings (split, layer, pan etc.). If you want to edit sounds, you have to use an external (software) editor. You can also import native DX7 sound banks.

However, the crucial factor will be how much the Dtronics device will cost. I would find up to 150 EUR reasonable, up to 200 EUR acceptable. We should bear in mind that the components of the DIY version cost less than 50 EUR (a cheap RPI already included) and the software has already been developed.

Lots of great FM synth textures, with an emphasis on bubbling, gentle arpeggiations, unobtrusive pads, and muted sounding keys. These sounds are well recorded, and generally well programmed. There were a few presets that lost track of their samples, but that was easy enough to correct. Overall, a highly useable and inspiring library. I feel confident this will be appearing in some of my tunes soon.

I wasn't expecting to be literally swept away by some of these sounds but had spent an hour not just trying out the sounds but really getting lost in the sounds, especially the pads. Warm FM! It's a thing. And using the modwheel was like opening a present - what surprise am I going to get this time? Great job, Franceso!

Mellow FM is simply extraordinairy. This will be an amazing addition to your ambient pad instruments. While the GUI has only a Delay and a Reverb slider, you will find dozens of preset instruments and multis. Sure it would be much prefered to be able to tweak it yourself, but this is a reminder that we choose to hear what the artist wants us to.

If I had to describe my perfect instrument it would probably be something pretty close to this. As with his superb 'WLP - Whole Lotta Pads' contribution, Francesco has supplied numerous patches and each of them is eminently inspiring and characterful. I was so impressed with the sounds in 'Mellow FM' that I've used it on multiple projects and just know I'll be returning to it again and again. I love the simplicity, elegance and functionality of the delay and reverb sliders, to me the ideal marriage of form and function. Once more, thank you, Francesco.

Yeah, I agree it would be lots of work if done properly with every VST you own. But I had minimalism in mind, like channel strip and couple of most important effects. It would be too much hasle for controlling every parameter with midi.

Well, I plan to investigate this particular issue in case I can implement it in some way, but I do not promise anything, and this will take a while. Where I have more doubts is in the plugins, since they are not fixed devices, they are added devices and some have hundreds of parameters.

The initial idea is to be able to change any index in the parameter panel by turning the wheel of the mouse over any parameter slider bar. The tool would be in charge of remembering it for each device (at least for native devices).

I am pleased to inform you that I have just released the new MUC v2.1 build 344.
You can download the MIDI Universal Controller tool in the first post, here. Sorry for the delay in releasing this new version. I know that some users were waiting for it.

This new version includes some arrangements and especially more features that make things easier when manipulating files and their presets with the Sampler Waveform, as well as incorporating and reordering some areas for the control of sliders. It also includes certain improvements regarding MIDI navigation. All the news are available in the Update History section at the beginning of this thread.

I have programmed a variety of Lua tools which are spread out in the tools section of these forums. However, the most important tools can be seen in my linked profile. There you can see the features and download them.

PATCHMAN MUSIC offers three Volumes of professional sounds for the Yamaha TX7 and compatibles. Each soundbank contains 32 Pro Patches. Many of the patches in these classic soundbanks have been programmed to make special use of the mod wheel for such things as brightness, adding a layered sound, adding attack, etc... We offer very attractive quantity discounts when ordering more than one soundbank. Please see below for complete details.

IMPORTANT report regarding the DEXED Softsynth Emulator: We have tested the DEXED apps on both desktop and iOS. The desktop version (available here for free) works perfectly fine loading in our DX7 soundbanks and we recommend it. But you should AVOID the iOS version DEXED. DEXED for iOS DOES NOT WORK. It has very high latency rendering it unplayable, and the breath controller parameters and reception are non-functioning. Breath controller does NOT work at all with the iOS version of DEXED.

Wind Controller #1 - This TX7 soundbank features 32 patches specially designed to be controlled with a wind controller such as the Yamaha WX5, WX7, WX11, WindJamm'r, Nyle Steiner MIDI EVI/EWI, Akai EWI USB, EWI4000s, EWI5000, EWI SOLO, EVI, MDT, NuEVI, NuRAD, Roland Aerophone, Aodyo Sylphyo, or Softwind Synthophone. These highly expressive sounds are also great for keyboardists when used with a breath controller such as the Yamaha BC1, BC2, or BC3 plugged directly into a keyboard with a breath controller input or into a device such as the MIDI Solutions Breath Controller Box or Anatek Wind Machine (out of production). This unique soundbank includes highly expressive synth leads and solo timbres carefully designed to respond to your breath expression. Volume 3 features acoustic emulations of trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, recorder, recorders, harmonica, and jazz guitar. Also includes Lyle and Chick leads, Pass horn, Matrix 6, Prophet, Breckery, BreckerTn, OBXa lead, Moog lead, MiniMoog, WX and Moog basses. These sounds were designed by wind controller expert Matt Traum. NOTE: This soundbank loads inside the Yamaha TX7- NOT inside a wind controller.)

Please Note: This soundbank is specially designed for use with a wind controller or breath controller and thus requires one of these devices for proper use. These sounds require MIDI continuous controller #2 (breath controller) in order to make any sound. If you do not have a wind controller or breath controller you will probably not be able to use these sounds.

"Your stuff is great. I am just starting to get the EWI back in shape for the new tour and will be using your sounds extensively. All the best." Ed Calle, Grammy Nominated, Sony Latin Recording Artist and wind controller virtuoso. Has worked with Steve Gadd, John Pattitucci, Arturo Sandoval, and many other top professionals "Thanks so much for DX7 Volume 3. I really have no idea how you did all that, but the sounds play so, so well with a wind controller that it's just mind-boggling. The analog emulations are especially a gas. Layering these with my EWI modules has a stupendous effect because the FM synthesis layer adds a grainy 'warmth' to the overall sound."

Formats: These soundbanks are available in Sysex (.SYX) file and Standard Midifile (.MID) formats for Mac/PC. Click here for an explanation of the various formats. Please note: Sorry, these soundbanks are NOT available on DATA CARTRIDGE or DATA CASSETTE.

The Algorythm defines the model of the patch, but the ratios can vary from preset to preset with the same algorythm, just like Envelope- and FM-Amount Settings. I would suggest downloading dexed and look for a patch with the algorythm you want to try out in VCV and then transfer those ratios, envelope-setting, etc. over to VCV.

V/Oct and Gate from the Midi CV (or your sequencer of choice) are split into 32 outputs using Autodafe Multiple 1x8 modules. These are input into 32 Count Modula Mute modules which can be used to switch on /off the V/Oct and Gate signals together.

Also the Algorithms are only part of it - the settings on each of the operators are a big part of the sound. I have got part of the way by using the DX7Envelope from Nysthi which lets you copy the values for EG Level and EG Rate directly from Dexed but this is just the envelope and there are a lot of other parameters that influence the sound.

Dexed can be configured to use some of the original math limitation of a DX synthesizer. This does not only apply to the DAC, it also involves the bit resolution of the sine waves and the way that the amplitude is applied to each operator. Since all of this is experimental, multiple engines will be available to be able to compare them easily.
