Keeping an entered variable value when returning to a panel

I have two panels, the first of which has a variable that is initialised in the userInputSpec.xml. The user then modifies the value and goes to the next panel that also uses that value in further settings. If the user goes back to the previous panel where the variable was modified, it returns to its originally set value instead of the value as modified by the user. How can I get it to keep the value set by the user? This is in izpack 5.
