Hi there,
I don’t know what IRADAH would respond to this offer of receiving the wheel chairs from abroad. I think it would be quiet expensive to bring them here in Pakistan. However I can suggest two options,
1. In case of smaller number of the wheelchairs, they can be sold there and money can be transferred to IRADAH
2. In case of bigger number of chairs we can contribute or collect money for their transportation (I don’t know how much would it cost)
I think Mr. Zaman can let us know and can lead the process in coordination with those living in UK and are willing to contribute.

We are also producing the wheelchairs in Lahore special design by Japan, its very smart and light weight wheelchairs with cushion for especially Spinal Cord people and other disabilities.
The available wheelchair in the market is made by china, cost of one china wheelchair is Pakistani Rs: 7000 to 8000 with out warranty, which is very huge and heavy weight wheelchair, it’s very difficult to carry those wheelchairs for the disabled persons,
I am totally agreed with Ms. Anbreen it would be quiet expensive to bring them here in Pakistan.
I can suggest and help for the assembling of the wheelchairs with 1 year warranty; I hope it would be quiet cheep for you,

Dear All,
My company name is Bin Qutab International and we are engaged in international freight forwarding worldwide.
As per my knowledge imported used items are banned in Pakistan, so we could not import used wheel chairs.
Regarding exemption in custom duties, we could import with name of that company who has exemption certificate from Govt of Pakistan, there is no other way.
I could assist you more on this once I have full information about these wheel chairs.
With regards.

Dear all,
Thank you to all for your excellent response. I understand the need and also the need for such an appeal but problem is much bigger than many of you envisaging. It needs larger action and support.
I work for World Health Organization in Geneva and quite involved with assistive devices programme especially on wheelchair provision. The need of wheelchair is on increase especially due to conflict, road traffic injuries, population growth and ageing. It is estimated that there is about 1% of any population need wheelchair. Considering this Pakistan needs more than a million wheelchairs. Majority of the wheelchair users are poor so most of these wheelchairs need to be subsidized. Wheelchair is not a sheep, goat, cow or a sewing machine - one cannot just distribute the wheelchair though it is a common practice in the developing world. Dimension, health condition, need and living environment of each person is different. Wheelchairs never get distributed in the west - each wheelchair comes with a prescription and dimension, wheelchair user as well as rehabilitation personnel play a big role in deciding or choosing a wheelchair. Wheelchair needs to satisfy the person's need - it should not be in other way.
According to Convention on the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities, Article 20 on Personal mobility:
States Parties shall take effective measures to ensure personal mobility with the greatest possible independence for persons with disabilities, including by:
a) Facilitating the personal mobility of persons with disabilities in the manner and at the time of their choice, and at affordable cost;
b) Facilitating access by persons with disabilities to quality mobility aids, devices, assistive technologies and forms of live assistance and intermediaries, including by making them available at affordable cost;
c) Providing training in mobility skills to persons with disabilities and to specialist staff working with persons with disabilities;
d) Encouraging entities that produce mobility aids, devices and assistive technologies to take into account all aspects of mobility for persons with disabilities.
All the steps you all are suggesting show your good intention but it will fail to meet the demand. State, NGOs and INGOs need to work together to address this issue - please convene a National Workshop, if required. WHO Guidelines on wheelchair provision could be one of the key background documents for the national workshop to develop a sustainable strategy for Pakistan. Like most of the countries especially where population is more than 100 million, one need a large scale production facilities or some similar arrangements to ensure persons with disabilities across the country can access quality wheelchairs. If you want to have more information about the guidelines please refer the website http://www.who.int/disabilities/technology/en/
With best wishes - Chapal

Dear Group Members
Greetings from LCDDP
I suggest Rehmat and her team to get the wheel chairs from Pakistan Bait-ul-Mall (PBM) through Milestones. I spoke to Mr. Shafique of Milestones at Islamabad last week. PBM has changed its application form and I can send the scanned copy of the same if needed. Fill in the form and get is signed from concerned officers from Chakwal and then submit it through Milestones. PBM is giving wheelchairs in hundreds. Recently they have distributed hundreds of chairs in Multan city

Thanks so much to all of you for you kindness and concern towards disability movement in Pakistan
The cost of one smart wheelchair with cushion (fit to body) is Rs: 8500/-. Wheelchair is also available in all sizes. In Pakistan no one is assembling specially design wheelchair for PWDs, The wheelchairs available in market is so heavy and large, which is very difficult to carry for disabled persons.
If you will bay 100 or 200 wheelchairs the cost of wheelchair will b decrees, I also give the one year warranty of parts
Best Regard,
Thank you Mr Imran Nazir for suggesting to contact bait-ul-maal for wheelchairs. This is the best option available to we Pakistani PWDs... because bait-ul-maal is a Pakistani institutions and Pakistan is a democratic country which means for the people, of the people, and by the poeple... there is no mention on any bait-ul-maal form that the application for wheelchairs should be submitted through a certain organization... it is an open for all scenario... A PWD is entitled to acclaim a wheel chair from bait-ul-maal for mobility without any clause or conditions...
Sir, You might have spoken to Mr Shafiq-ur-Rehman of milestone regarding the wheelchairs scheme... your suggestions that application forms for wheel chairs from bait-ul-maal should be submitted through milestone... this is undue publicity...has Mr Shaifq-ur-Rehman of milestone given you his words that he will help PWDs of Pakistan to acquire wheelchairs from PBM... Better get it in written from Mr Shafiq-ur-Rehman of his consent to help the PWDs on this open forum
Fiifty PWDs from Karachi who were promised wheelchairs by Mr Shafiq-ur-Rehman of Milestone by Bait-ul-maal never came. But, 250 wheelchairs were distributed in the interior Sindh by bait-ul-maal through milestone by an organization .
Deprived of their hopefulness of mobility and backing out from his words by Mr Shafiq-ur-rehman of milestone (a man is apraised through his words and a woman is apriased through her beauty)
Has really disappointed the 50 PWDs and many 1000s other PWDs from Karachi who were ready to submit their forms to PBM through milestone.
Breaking the heart of a PWD is a crime, people accept it or dont but yes sir this is a crime...
Just imagine 50 PWDs awaiting their assisstive equipments by which they would become mobile are laden with a gloomy truth that words given to them were just to gain publicity rather than giving them mobility.
Mr. Shafiq-ur-Rehman himself a PWD should have felt what stage the 50 PWDs of Karachi might be going through after been deprived of the promised wheelchair.
The person and the instituton not even had the courtesy to pick up the phone and reply to PWDs about the whereabouts of the promised wheelchairs.
Good work Mr Imran Nazir,keep on guiding our pure andinnocent PWDs
Cheers! NSB
