Dear Friends,

IRADAH (Initiative for Raising Awareness, Development and Assimilation of Handicapped) has been organizing Outreach Camps in the far flung areas of District Chakwal to reach out to the persons with disabilities, register them and provide them free check up, wheelchairs, tricycles and other support that they need.

During these camps, IRADAH has come across a 7 years old girl child Ayesha. She belongs to village Simbal, Union Council Khairpur, Tehsil Kallar Kahar of District Chakwal. She is both deaf and blind.

For IRADAH, it is first-of-its-kind case. IRADAH has come across deaf children and knows how to help them. IRADAH has come across blind children and knows how to help them. However, in this case, IRADAH team and her parents are in a fix and do not know what to do. We are looking forward to advice guidance from you – the friends and supporters of IRADAH.

May ALLAH give you Ajr and Jaza-i-Khair for taking the initiative. Allah chooses among His people whome He wishes to get His order done. Knowing that you would have to be bit creative in this case, But Allah provides the strength to us when we do make our intention to help someone. MashaALLAH.

Dear Tanveer, Does he have any developmental delays etc. besides stammering? while speech dealys and stammering etc. can be due to developmental issues or certain disabilities, they are also often caused by emotional distress and/or trauma. Thus it would be important that if there is not apparent physical cause for this(verified by the doctor) then the best would be to contact a psychologist. Do get in touch with Youth Helpline by calling their toll free number 080022444 for further guidance as well as referral.
Good Luck!

Thank you all of you for the wonderful support. In case you want to know
about me and my background, let me explain briefly about myself. I am
profoundly deaf,  did my MA Special Education from Punjab University with a
Gold medal, and did my Masters of Science in Technology from Johns Hopkins
University. Right now, I am doing my PhD.
I set up the school last year in Lahore, have my staff working there and
with my mother as a speech therapist on the board, and mashallah, the school
is in its second year and it has been making great progress even when we
have limited resources but inshallah, it will do wonders with time. Change
takes time.
So thank you. I will make sure that this girl will receive excellent care in
her free education from us.
Sincerely,
Zara Husain.

Great you have taken this up. Count me in case of some follow up one time
cost support from me whenever that arises in future. We got to ensure the
girl is in Zara's school and that there is no hinderance in her continued
education in financial terms. You have my email now.

Dear Ms Hussain

Thank you very much for your interest and support.
We are trying to contact the family and discuss it with them, but we have come to know that there are some serious problems within the family, which affected their communication with IRADAH for the time being. We would get back to you as soon as these issues are resolved and the family is able to discuss the girl's future with us.

You can arrange her transportation costs and we will provide her a free education. Please bring her parents too so we will conduct a full intake of her background.

Dear All,

Although Internet is great tool for networking and exchanging information. But we need to be careful, I noticed that now there are many forum on Disability and mostly build up by picking emails from here and there with out asking the permission from the person.

Standard way is to invite people to join, and unless they join the group / forum themselves we shall not add their emails.

I hope as time pass we will learn more and will have a better online network of PWDs, DPWs and related organization.

One more thing I'd like to say is that subject line is very important, when I read it first "Advice for Deaf & Blind Girl" I thought someone picked some information from here or there and sending for Deaf & Blind Girls. As I alwasy have 100s of email daily here I didn't open, until Shafiq and Zara's emails appears.

Subject line could be "Any advice for Deaf - Blind Girl ?"

And I am proud of Zara a member of our Deaf community of Pakistan, she proves that if given the chance and facilities Deaf are not less than anyone.

keep up the good work

I second the understanding of last couple of mails and suggest that until unless the subject is linked to all in your mailing list, mails should not be directed to everybody. Keep things specified. Thanks.

AslamoAlaikum,

I hope that you are well. I also hope that you remember me from the case of Ayesha, a deaf and blind girl from Chakwal. I am so sorry that the case did not work out due to her patriachial family's refusal to grant her an education. This case is an example of many similar cases in Pakistan.

The reason I am approaching you is to ask for your generosity in donating money to help with the expenses of running the school. At the time of Ayesha case, Lahore Speech and Language School was developed in 2 rooms building in the backyard of my parents' home in 2008.  Now it is shifted with my own expenses to an 11 room building on rent in 2010.

Lahore Speech and Language School is a non profit organization that always strives to be a model school for the deaf and hard of hearing children, and maintain itself as the trailblazer of the modern teaching practices in both language education and speech therapy at this time when the available schools funded by the present federal and state governments fail to groom deaf children become literate. The school also provides speech therapy in Urdu and English languages. LSLS educates its students on a balanced literacy curriculum incorporating Islamic values and academics importance that enables the children to compete well in the face of challenges. Education is being free of charge to 10 students from low income and disadvantaged homes.

I am myself a deaf woman responsible for the whole development of LSLS and I work without any salary. Spending out of my pocket caused me a lot of hardships. I spent all my savings on this school. All the teachers and school personnel are women. I am trying to make a social change in deaf education in Lahore, Pakistan but I need a LOT of financial support to operate the school and keep it as a friendly environment for deaf children.

As the school is a non profit organization, it is hard to make the ends meet and we are relying on our own funding and small donations to survive. The children studying at LSLS need much of your help on this regard. The school is in danger on defaulting its rent. We would need your generosity to help us pay the rent.

At the present we have no reading program due to lack of reading materials. We have no donors to give to the children to read. We have no donor to help us buy the electricity generator machines so the children can continue to study with fan and lightning.

If there is no donor to support the school, it will collapse and a bright future for those deaf children will close. So a thought is to turn to the world community to help the children secure their education.

The school is my childhood dream of making a better place of learning for deaf children because I grew up deaf most of my life in Lahore, have succeeded in academics with my own passion for reading which I grew up doing mostly, and I have set out on this personal mission with my own expenses. I try hard to not be a burden on everyone. I always had the pride to be able to support this school by all means but as life caught up with me, I am not able to support the school in the long run. My mother, Salma Iftikhar, who is a speech therapist in this school, she and I pool in money in trying conditions.

That means I have to rely on the kindness of strangers and people involved in the Pakistani and world communities to help pool in monetary and material resources to help the Lahore Speech and Language School run on long terms.

If you are willing to help us at Lahore Speech and Language School, the team of teachers, children and I will be eternally grateful.

My story can be read and listened at:

Follow up on your generous donations will be acknowledged with pictures of the beneficiaries, monthly newsletter, and acknowledgement in an email.

Donations can be any amount and will cover the following demands:

Books- for the purchase of a book bag and two books for each child to read.

Low assistive technology- for purchase of CDS, DVDS, video cassettes, batteries for hearing aids, batteries for flashlights, USB drives, and back up hard drive.

Rent: a small portion of dollars will help pay the monthly rent of the school building.

Meal and Water- We provide clean water from Nestle's drinking bottles for our children but as the weather is hot, we need more quantities of clean water. Also we need to develop a nutritional meal for our children to eat from catering services.

Materials and supplies- For project learning purposes: we need lamination machines, laminate transparencies, stationery, poster papers, paint supplies, glue, pictures, marking tools, beads, cards, and pens to sustain the operations of teaching and instruction delivery.

Thank you!
