Unselfish Love

John 15:13 KJV

Greater love hath no man than this,

that a man lay down his life for his friends.

 

At a recent Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. 

 

At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back.  Then they all turned around and went back...every one of them.  One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said,"This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. 

People who were there are still telling the story.  Why?  Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves.  What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course, and giving of ourselves for others.

1 John 3:16-19 (KJV)

 Hereby perceive we the love of God,

because He laid down his life for us:

and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

{17} But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need,

and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him,

 how dwelleth the love of God in him?

{18} My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue;

but in deed and in truth.

{19} And hereby we know that we are of the truth,

1 Cor 13 (KJV)

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels,

and have not charity{Grk=affectionate generousity, unselfish love},

I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge;

 and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains,

and have not charity, I am nothing.

but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;

whether there be tongues, they shall cease;

whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

{10} But when that which is perfect is come,

then that which is in part shall be done away.

{11} When I was a child, I spake as a child,

I understood as a child, I thought as a child:

but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

 {12} For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:

now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

{13} And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three;

 but the greatest of these is charity.

 

John 15:8-14 (KJV)

 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit;

so shall ye be my disciples.

{9} As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you:

continue ye in my love{Grk=affectionate generousity, unselfish love}.

{10} If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love;

even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

that my joy might remain in you,

and that your joy might be full.

{12} This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

John 10:9-15 (KJV)

 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved,

 and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Rom 5:1-12 (KJV)

Therefore being justified by faith,

we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

{2} By whom also we have access by faith into this grace

and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

{8} But God commendeth his love toward us,

we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,

much more, being reconciled,

 we shall be saved by his life.

 {11} And not only so,

but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

 by whom we have now received the atonement.

{12} Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world,

and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men,

for that all have sinned:

 

Eph 4:29-32 (KJV)

 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth,

but that which is good to the use of edifying,

that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

{30} And grieve not the holy Spirit of God,

whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

{31} Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking,

be put away from you, with all malice:

{32} And be ye kind one to another,

tenderhearted, forgiving one another,

even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
