Hi

I'm evaluating the possibility to use IxoraRMS (and to contribute to
it)
I downloaded the last release (1.1), I installed it and I tried to use
it (by using the simple Windows sample project provided) but i can't
make it work good.
I started the stress test but i can't see the result as you showed in
the documentation
My environment is:
Windoxs XP Professional version 2002 SP3
JVM 1.6.0_22

in the log files there is nothing written; when i select the reaction
log there are a lot of messages like this one:
Message: Total traffic on network card localhost/Windows/root/Network
Interface/Realtek RTL8168C[P]_8111C[P] PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC -
Miniport dell'Utilità di pianificazione pacchetti on host localhost is
NaNMB/s. If you have a Gigabit network card increase the threshold for
this reaction to 35 MB/s
Message: Total traffic on network card localhost/Windows/root/Network
Interface/Periferica Bluetooth [Personal Area Network] on host
localhost is NaNMB/s. If you have a Gigabit network card increase the
threshold for this reaction to 35 MB/s
Message: The number of context switches on host localhost is too high
Message: Process localhost/Windows/root/Process/winamp is using NaN of
the CPU on host localhost

and so on.....how can i solve this issue?
I started the HostManager only on the IP address 127.0.0.1

Hi,

Can you send me a screenshot of the About box(Help > About) - or just
copy and paste all the text information there?

And I need a more detailed description of your environment... If you
have IxoraRMS running on the host that you are monitoring you don't
need the HostManager so you can start by shutting this down to keep
things simple.
If you didn't apply fix pack 1 (see downloads ixorarms-1-1-fp1.zip)
please do so now.

For the simplest environment, for instance running IxoraRMS on a Win
machine that you want to monitor you take the following steps:
-start up IxoraRMS and load the winsample.rmss session file provided
with the tool
-start the monitorig session
-enable logging to a file

If you followed the steps above please send me the log files (IxoraRMS/
logs folder).

Regards,
Daniel

You should not have to add any jar files to the jars folder. You just
unzip the tool and start using it (see
http://www.ixorarms.com/documentation/introduction/getting-started-with-ixorarms).

To start logging to a file follow the instructions here:
http://www.ixorarms.com/documentation/user-guide/log-and-replay

You should also apply the fix pack = you can download it from here:
http://code.google.com/p/ixora-rms/downloads/detail?name=ixorarms-1-1-fp1.zip&can=2&q=

Daniel

Hi Daniel

Here what i did: i re-installed ixora; i installed the patch by unzipping it in the installation direcotry of Ixora (it overrided the old jar and the old product file)
I started only the console (console.bat) as i wanted to monitor my PC (windows XP SP3)
I enabled the logging on the file (i colled this file localhost10122010.rmsl) and i monitored my pc for at about 15 minutes
I don't see the exact situation you showed in the sample (I loaded the winsample.rmss and used this one) i can't understand if there is some misunderstanding in my installation or not
The reaction logs tell me some messages (like that winamp is using a NaNCPU percentual and so on)
How can i be sure if i correctly installed the ixora; anyway i upload the log file "localhost10122010.rmsl" so you can check it.

If i got it exactly if i want to monitor a remote linux server i must launch the hostmanager both on my pc (where i use the console) and on the target server (the one i want to monitor), am i correct?

Regards,
Angelo

You should not have to add any jar files to the jars folder. You just
localhost10122010.zip

Hi Angelo,
It looks like the data collection for Windows has problems on your
system.
Can you send me all the log files from the IxoraRMS/logs folder?

As for your question about monitoring Linux - you have two options:
- start HostManager on the Linux machine and then start your Linux
agent without additional configuration (select the Location to be
remote)
- monitor the remote system using telnet or ssh2 - in this case you
don't need a HostManager process running on the Linux box (select the
Location in the Agent Configuration dialog box to be local and
configure the connection details)

In general the HostManager is only needed to access systems that are
difficult to monitor remotely, because the Linux agent can
use telnet or ssh2 to connect remotely to the monitored system you
don't need the HostManager.

See this for a bit more info on the Linux agent:
http://www.ixorarms.com/documentation/monitoring-agents/linux

Thanks,
Daniel

Not sure what's going on...
I tested the tool in an environment similar to yours (Windoxs XP
Professional version 2002 SP3 and JVM 1.6.0_22) and I could not
reproduce it.
I'll try to put together a test case to try and get more information
from your environment if you are interested (it will be a simple java
program that's using the DLL shipped with IxoraRMS and writing info to
a text file)...

In the meantime - did you test the tool by any chance on a different
system and if so were you successful?

Thanks,
Daniel

I didn't test it on different system as i was "launched" in a critical project but it's my intention to do some other tests because i think it's a very usefull software.

Hi Angelo,
Can you replace IxoraRMS/jars/AgentWindows.jar with the version attached to this message?
Load the winsample file, start it and leave it running for about 15-20 seconds(a few data capture cycles), stop it and then send me the log file (IxoraRMS/logs/console.log).
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Angelo,

I need more data from you. This time I instrumented winperf.dll. Replace the one in IxoraRMS/bin with the attached one.
In order to capture the instrumentation you need to run this tool (DebugView): http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896647.aspx

Run DebugView.exe and click on File > Log to File to log the content to a file. Make sure Capture Win32 is checked in the Capture menu.

After you replaced winperf.dll with the one attached, start IxoraRMS, load winsample session and start it. Leave it running just for a few cycles.
You should see the instrumentation data in DebugView and the configured log file.

Send me the DebugView log file.

I would also like to get more information about your Windows system. Can you run the command below from a windows command prompt and send me the report as well?

msinfo32 /report C:\win-report.txt

Thanks,
Daniel

Can you see the correct values for counters using the perfmon windows
utility? You can start it from the command prompt and by default it
should display some core counters. If you can't see any counters when
you start it try and add some to see if it works.

I need to check that the performance infrastructure in Windows is ok -
it seems that sometimes it can become corrupted. Windows comes with a
monitoring tool of its own. The name of the program is perfmon. If you
type perfmon at a command prompt it should start up the perfmon GUI.
As soon as you start it you should see some core counter being
displayed (% Processor Time, Pages/sec, Avg. Disk Queue Length on my
machine).
If these counters seem to have correct values it means that the
performance infrastructure in Windows is fine, if not then it is
corrupted and there are some steps you can take to fix it (I'll send
you some MS links if that's the case).
Thanks,
Daniel
