The National Network for Early Language Learning, NNELL, is pleased to
offer the 2009 Summer Institute: “Teaching Culture: Developing In-
Depth Persepctive” presented by the renowned Dr. Mimi Met. We'll be
meeting at the National Foreign Language Resource Center on the lovely
Iowa State University campus on July 17-19, 2009.
This workshop will target the development of teacher background
knowledge of the 3 P's of the Culture Strand in our national
standards: Perspectives, Practices and Products. Often, we as second
language teachers are asked to teach Culture without having the
prerequisite knowledge to do so. In this institute, participants will
unpack the 3P's in such a way as to gain in-depth understanding of
exactly what Culture is, what it means, and which aspects of Culture
are developmentally appropriate to teach at particular levels of
instruction. An alignment of Social Studies and FL Cultural curricula
will be discussed. This workshop will not include the development of
specific lesson plans and activities associated with the teaching of
Culture, but will serve to prepare all second language teachers,
regardless of their language of instruction or the formatting of their
program to better deliver meaningful instruction regarding the
cultures associated with their target language.
This institute is open to all of NNELL's members. If you're not a
member, membership costs $30 and includes 2 issues of Learning
Languages, 3 issues of E-NNELL notes, and access to the members only
portion of the NNELL website. Go to the
www.nnell.org for the
membership form.
