I was surprised to learn a friend recently took up smoking. I asked
him what was going on and he said after much deliberation he decided
to go for it. What surprised me even more is he said he liked it and
recommended I start. This undoubtedly got me thinking.

I can tell he likes smoking and seems determined to continue. I have
never experienced smoking before but thinking about it, I can actually
see myself smoking and see myself liking it.

The reason I've never smoked before is that I got burnt real bad with
a cigarette when I was small and hated them in their lit up state but
I’m sure this aversion will be overcome once I start.

So, I’m thinking taking up my friend’s advice. He will be out of town
for the next two weeks, so if I do, I will have to get going without
his encouragement. I’m actually thinking of surprising him on his
return but have some questions. How do I get motivated starting and
what do I need to know not breaking it off before his return? If I
were to start now, what are my expectations after two weeks? Also, I
was wondering what brand is recommended for the beginner?

Hi
Welcome to the group
You will like smoking. You should take your friends advice. Smoking is
the most wonderful habit My wife and I took up.
You should surprise him.
i would say Start smoking right away
but i would first associate myself with smokers and start hanging out
with smokers. You set your own expectations you can be 10 a day smoker
or 2 pack a day.
Marlboro lights are the best to start with.

Thanks for the welcome and advice. I just got done trying smoking for
the first time and it did not go the way I thought it would. I don't
have smoking friends to hang out with so, I was goin down the street
and this guy was just fixing to light a cigarette, so I go up to him
and I’m like, hey, man, what’s up? And he says to me, he says ‘you
want a cigarette’ and I’m like no way, man. In your dreams. Next –
pow! I’m smoking.

I was not exactly comfortable with the situation accepting a cigarette
from a stranger. Not only that, once I got over the coughing, I was
sick to the stomach. I only managed to smoke part of a cigarette. So,
the dude goes, he goes ‘Christ, shorty, what happened, first time?’ I
did not want to punk the dude so I said I was just fixing becoming a
smoker. I was like I’m not beat yet, so I went like dude, here’s some
money, fix me some Marlboro lights. So he’s like, wow, wanna start
smoking, you got it.

So, I’m wondering, since my friend likes smoking so much, clearly I’m
doing something wrong. S’all good but I need advice if I wanna awe him
out when he returns. Any help?

I have not even opened the pack the dude bought me. Is smoking really
as cool as it looks? I’m hesitant trying again, maybe I’m not cut out
for smoking, idk.

Burn

The trick of the trade is to increase by one a day ,take small drags
to start with , Suck in on the cigarette like a straw, Breathe in
hold the smoke in your lungs for the count of 4 .Slowly exhale out
through your mouth.. The trick of the trade is to try to smoke
everytime you are around smokers. Everytime you think about smoking.
Another advice i would advice i would give you is to.Smoke after
completing certain task. This way you will associate smoking with that
task. Increase your smoking intake by 1 a day until you get to your
desired goal. Smoke after every meal, When you get up.. Just start
smoking when you are around other smokers. You have your own
cigarettes .So go from there .But my advice is increase by one a day
and smoke after doing something such as eating or watching tv.

I gave it another try but have major issues. When nobody was
numszayin, I tore the cellophane open and removed the silver paper and
took out a cigarette, actually, I struggled getting it out and landed
up using my nail to pry it out. I only damaged it a little but it was
still usable…

I inhaled eagerly. Instantaneously coughed, almost vomited, not from
the smoke but from coughing. I wiped the tearing from my eyes and sat
watching the burning cigarette between my fingers. It crackled like
tsst-tsst so I took another hit. Cough.

Smokers never cough, I do. I want to continue but can’t. Is there
something smokers know that I don’t? Maybe I should just smoke and
not inhale, but then what is the point?

Do not inhale eagerly take smaller inhales, You are pushing it too
much this is why you are coughing. Are you sucking on the filter like
a straw? When you suck in after you remove the cigarette breathe in
deep so the smoke gets down in your lungs. Hold the smoke in your
lungs to the count of 4 then exhale through your mouth. But do not
inhale eagerly take it slower. Put the cigarette in your mouth, Remove
it , breathe in , hold it for 4 counts , exhale , remove the
cigarette from your lips, conitine this method. but keep sucking like
a straw .Give us an update tomorrow .Don't give up , If at first you
don't succeed try try again. Smokers do cough in the beginning until
they are used to it. Try again tomorrow and give us another update.

Your advice, which I followed to the word, worked! Thank you. I was
definitely inhaling too aggressively. After reading your advice this
morning, I decided to give it another go. The count of four works well
and the smoke coming out of me was amazing. I started with tiny
inhales and after five rounds I was able to inhale bigger. Towards the
middle of the cigarette, the nicotine suddenly kicked in. This was
intense, so I stopped smoking.

I’m both nervous and excited now that I’m getting the hang of it but
have another small question. I don’t like the after taste. Is this
something smokers learn to live with?

You eventually learn to live with the taste of cigarette smoke in your
mouth after you smoke a cigarette but, In the meantime until you get
used to it,I would say Brush your teeth everytime you smoke a
cigarette if the after taste bothers you too much. However if you are
proud of the aftertaste from the cigarette. Leave the taste in your
mouth. You will soon love the smell of cigarette smoke in your hair
and on your clothes. Just read Koifish's one year Anniversary review.
Since today is Thursday give us another update tomorrow and then keep
smoking the way i told you over the weekend and give us a report on
Monday

One more word of advice when you feel the nicotine start to kick in
towards the middle of the cigarette ,Keep smoking until you get to the
end of the filter. This will make the nicotine rush more plesant, You
are looking for the nicotine rush. So when it starts to feel intense
keep smoking don't stop this will help to build you nicotine level up
and cause you to start craving nicotine faster/

The next time you smoke and you get towards the end,When you feel the
nicotine kick in KEEP SMOKING , The intense feeling you are getting is
a NICOTINE RUSH.You want ot get to the place where you can smoke a
whole cigarette in one sitting. It is alright to be both nervous and
excited to be getting the hang of smoking . As for your question about
the after taste , You can do one of two things , Either Brush your
teeth or chew a piece of gum after you smoke a cigarette, Or if you
are proud of the smokers taste in your mouth just leave things as is
and do nothing. Keep us posted on how your smoking progress goes
tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice, it got me thinking. After yesterday’s
smoking I was curious what it would be like smoking a whole cigarette.
I managed to ward off my curiosity but after thinking about it
countless times today, I broke down trying. I just completed my first
full cigarette and I’m fine!

I managed medium sizes inhales without coughing. About half-way
through, I started getting a feeling that I’m floating and at the same
time felt calmness. It was intense but I was able to continue smoking.
Towards the end, the floating feeling started to go away just a little
but not completely. It is now about 20 minuets since I smoked and I’m
still floating a little but in a good way. I can compare it to body
surfing a wave on the beach. While I was smoking, it was like riding
the wave towards the beach, now I’m washed out on the beach, water
still flowing over me…

I can’t say I like smoking but I have to admit it is not completely
unacceptable either. I might smoke another later on today - I’d like
to re-experience the floating.

I Purposely did not brush my teath after smoking because I wanted to
see if I could live with the taste. I can still taste the smoke but
it's now turned smokey-sweet, not too bad, I guess.

That’s my update, what’s next?

Just keep doing the same thing from now on, But try smoking after you
complete a task, Here is a schedule i want you to try

1)Smoke a cigarette when you first get up of a morning.
2)Smoke a Cigarette on your way driving in to work
3)Smoke a Cigarette on your morning break
4)Smoke a Cigarette at Lunch
5)Smoke a Cigaertte on your break
6)Smoke a cigarette on the way home
7)Smoke another Cigarette after you eat Your evening meal
8)Smoke a cigarette while you are watching Television
9)If you go out in public smoke a cigarette everytime you feel the
urge to light up
10)If you get a dry mouth try drinking a glass of water ,If the
driness continues try smoking a cigarette
11)If you get a watery mouth and you feel you are thirsty drink a
glass of water or something If this does not help try smoking a
cigarette. A lot of times when you have a severely dry mouth it means
you might be craving a cigarette.
12)If you get a Dry mouth and your lips stick together if a drink of
water does not curb your thirst try smoking a cigarette , the
cigarette will make your mouth begin to water again.
13) Stick to smoking a whole cigarette and give us an update on
Monday

I experimented smoking this weekend. I guess I did not smoke that
much, two on Saturday, three on Sunday:

My first on Saturday was while goosing with skateboarding friends who
don’t smoke. I was like “I smoked a whole cigarette yesterday and I’m
still alive today”. They did not believe me, so I took one out and
they were like “Oh, no! Don’t smoke”. I had no trouble smoking, it
felt good in fact. I did feel a bit self-conscious though but that and
their making a fool of me wore off long before I finished my smoke.

The second one that day was while walking the dog. Half way down I
bumped into another friend, he was like wtf “since when do you smoke.”
I was like “just starting?” He looked scared out of his mind but did
ask if I was addicted. I said “no, of course not. I can stop whenever
I please”.

On Sunday we went to church. It felt like forever. My mind was on
smoking. It was hot and the benches were hard and all I could think of
was trying another cigarette. It was only at the pool later on that I
had a chance to smoke. In fact, I had two. The first I had on my own
when other smokers came to join me. I was surprised how at ease I felt
smoking with them. I lit the second one without thinking much about it
and just smoked with them but then I had to go.

Later on, back home, I called a friend. So he goes, he goes “I went by
the pool and I saw you smoke”. I was like “yea, I was, so what?” We
talked for a while and he wanted to meet for ice cream. I think the
taste of the ice cream made me want to smoke, which I did and of
course, my friend was curios, very curious. Had I known better, I
would have offered him one. Instead, I was like “So, you look
surprised, so?” So he goes, he goes “So, can I have one?” It turns
out he’s a beginner just like me and he had a few here and there.

This morning after breakfast I had to mow my aunt’s lawn. My aunt and
her husband both smoke and I don’t know why, but it seemed more
noticeable to me this morning. I never noticed how much they smoke
until now. Watching them smoke made me want to smoke too but I managed
to save it for my walk back home.

To answer your questions, yes, I’m a guy and I’m 14 years. I don’t
want my parents to know I’m starting to smoke, they don’t smoke and
they would want me not to smoke.

I still can’t say I really like smoking, I just smoke out of
curiosity. I like the feeling I get when I inhale, which I now do
every time I smoke.

It did cross my mind that my pack of Marlboro lights won’t last
forever but have not given much thought about the future. This morning
I did get an out-of-the-blue urge to smoke, so I took the dog for a
walk. The urge was not completely gone, so, an hour later I had to
take the dog for another walk and my mom wanted an explanation. I just
said the first time was unproductive but I know I’m treading on thin
ice and will have to come up with a better plan here.

Should I just tell them what I’m doing or will that sour things for
me? All I know is if I do tell them, there will be a BIG explosion and
I’m not sure I’m ready for it.

I was skateboarding with my friends and learnt to do perfect Indy
grabs. Dead beat but proud what I learnt, I NAH-lee’d my board, went
for a smoke, on my own, behind a truck, safe from being goosed. I had
to hurry and I got a head-spin from smoking, so I returned to the game
doing another Indy. Splat! It hurt but I got up determined to re-
master the trick. Again, I sailed off the ramp, getting as much speed
as possible for another Indy. Splat! This time I did not even have the
chance to roll out of the fall and bruised my tail bone.

Was it the smoking that spooked my co-ordination and balance?

Hi,

Thanks for asking. My friend got back Saturday the 18th and I really
surprised him! Me and Walter (my friend) have this little business
going, we build and paint wood birdhouses and sell them at a flee
market. So, we were working in his dad’s garage on some houses and
Walter was having a smoke. He again suggested I should try smoking. I
was waiting for that so I went “I already did and I like it” while
lighting up one of my Marlboro Lights.

He was like “W-What happened? When did you start?” I told him the
story and then there was a long silence. We just continued painting,
then he suddenly said “Marlboro Lights are for boys, you gotta get
Embassy, they are for men.”

Long story short, I now smoke Embassy. At first I managed 3 a day but
started liking them and landed up smoking 4 to five a day, mostly when
I’m with Walter.

I have a question I dare not ask Walter. Lately, when I smoke I get an
urge to JO. I don’t know why, it just happens. My question is next
time when I’m on my own if it is advisable to do both at the same time
or would that be bad for my health?

Hi,

I'm going to try it anyway.

I had no real problem with the switch. Walter smokes Embassy Menthol,
so him and his brother had me try one. Something missing from the
Marlboro Lights I found in the Embassy, don’t know what but they leave
me more satisfied. I’m almost done with my 2nd pack of Embassy and I’m
going to continue with them.

Walter’s parents don’t “officially know he is smoking”. Walter got
started bumming cigarettes here and there from his 18 year old
brother, now 8 months later, smokes about 4 packs a week. Walter’s
brother admits he is addicted and can’t go without smoking. I think
Walter is addicted too he just does not want to admit it. How will I
know when I’m getting addicted?

Hi,

After reading Jordan’s message and doing some soul searching the
weekend, I have to conclude that I am addicted. At first I was in
denial and refused to believe that it can happen after only one month
of smoking. I admit, I smoked at least a couple of times each day of
the month and it never occurred to me to skip a day.

So, Saturday I went without smoking, well, most of Saturday at least.
Until about lunch time, I had no urges to smoke. Around 2 pm I was
thinking about smoking a lot and even thought of having just a few
drags. I resisted. Around 4 pm I felt very restless and could think of
nothing else but wanting to smoke, so I went over to Walter’s house.
Of course, he was smoking so I landed up taking one drag from his
cigarette. This made things worse and I landed up smoking a whole
cigarette. I felt better and had my concentration back. Yesterday I
made up what I lost on Saturday, smoked 7.

I already had 3 today and I do not want a repeat of Saturday’s ordeal.

I think you might have me confused with someone else but maybe not. 6
weeks ago I started while my friend Walter was out of town and
surprised him when he got back. Since then, I never had a problem
smoking around him. In fact I find I smoke more when Walter is around.
I like Embassy Menthol. I usually smoke 5 to 6 a day and if I could,
I'd smoke more.

Some of my other friends smoke but most of them don’t. I don't want my
parents to know so I have to do it while I’m away from home. I want to
smoke openly around all my friends but one of them is making my life
difficult. He’s threatening, unless I quit, telling my parents. I’m
not sure what to do about this. I like smoking and I don’t want to
stop but if my parents had to find out, things will get ugly. I was
thinking trashing his face when he makes further threats but that will
make things worse. I also thought about getting him to smoke. It will
solve the problem but he is already so ant-smoking, don’t know if this
will work. As far as my friends go, I don't want to smoke in secret
but I don't know if I have any other option. Any advice?

Talk to all your smoking friends behind this guy's back and you guys
need to hatch a plan to get him started smoking . Maybe get him drunk
on alcohol. . A cigarette always wards off a benge. So try to get him
to drink so beer .Then he will get so drunk he won't know what he is
doing , Then he will have to smoke a cigarette to get sober. But try
to put the beer to him the more he drinks the drunker he will get .
The drunker he gets the more cigarettes he will smoke/

Hope this works

I talked to my friend Walter and his brother about this guy who is
trying to blackmail me. Walter’s brother came up with a real neat
solution. We invited the dude to Walter’s house and Walter’s brother
asked the dude to hold onto his cigarette while he fixes us some soda.
Walter then snapped some pictures of the dude holding the cigarette
and said if he even as much as think of telling on me, his parents
will be sure to receive copies of the pictures. The dude then broke
down confessing he had smoked once before. We gave him a cigarette of
his own. He seemed quite good at taking some deep inhales. I think he
smoked on more than one occasion before. I just smiled and thought to
myself “Dude, why did you have to be so difficult if you could just
simply have smoked with us in the first place.” Anyhow, I am relieved
this dude is off my back and I think we will see more of him smoking
in the near future. He was already asking how we get ahold of out
smokes, so go figure!

It seem we have the same mission ahead of us, you with your roommate,
me with this dude that wanted to tell on me. He me followed me back
from school yesterday and asked if he could borrow one of my
cigarettes. We got talking and he recently found out he had been
adopted at birth.

So, why did your room mate want a drag from yours? It seems a strange
thing for a non-smoker to do. Did he smoke some more last night? Hope
you don't mind me asking.
