Is comma before *but* required

Hi Sir,

Thank you for the previous response.

Are there scenarios, where comma before *but* is required. As far as I know, the general format is : X but Y. Then in the below sentence, why we have comma before *but*.

The correct sentence is

Jim Thorpe, the legendary multi-sport star, enjoyed playing football more than he enjoyed running track and field, but it was winning the gold medal at the 1912 Olympic pentathlon that shot him to fame. (X and Y Parallel). More X than Y.
