Hi All,

Please tell the answer and clarify the same for the below question as follows:

In a certain year, the difference between Mary’s and Jim’s was twice
the difference between Mary’s and Kate’s annual salaries. If Mary’s
annual salary was the highest of the 3 people, what’s the average
(arithmetic mean) annual salary of the 3 people that year?

1.       Jim’s annual salary was 30,000 that year.
2.       Kate’s annual salary was 40,000 that year.

Thanks,
Amit

Amit,

I think its C. The question asks about average salary for the three, so we need to know their individual salaries.

Statement one tells about Jims salary alone, subsitituing in the formula below we have two unknowns M and K
Similary with Statement 2 we have two unknows. With statements both together we get the following.

M-30 = 2(M-40)
M-30 = 2M-80
M = 50

We can then find the averge salary

Correct Answer is B.
That is why i am confused, even according to me its C

Hmm... Not sure... Even if you plug in values in the equation for Statement B we get two possibilities

Now M>J and M>K

So either M can be 50 and J can be 30 K = 40
or M can be 45 and J can be 35  and K = 40

Substituing this in the question we still satisify the condition that M-J = 2(M-K)

Hey guys,
All these three people's salaries are in AP and Mary's salary was maximum.
Mary> Kathy > Jim.

Therefore, mean will be Katy's salary. You can check with any number.

(2, 5, 8) Mean will be 5.

Vandana,

How did you conclude about M>K>J? the problem only specifies M>K and M>J no relation specified between K and J.

Hi,

I tried solving all the above questions and I have given my answers with explanations for each question after that question.

Please follow this link, hope it would be useful:

Note: Please check the attachment.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.In a certain year, the difference between Mary’s and Jim’s was twice

the difference between Mary’s and Kate’s annual salaries. If Mary’s
annual salary was the highest of the 3 people, what’s the average
(arithmetic mean) annual salary of the 3 people that year?

1.       Jim’s annual salary was 30,000 that year.
2.       Kate’s annual salary was 40,000 that year.

Ans:

(M-J) = 2 (M-K) ;  M > J  ; M > K

simplifying the eqn, 2K-J=M ;  => K=(M+J)/2 ; which implies that K is the average. Hence B is the answer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.Each prime factor of x^2 is greater than 7

What are numbers we can select  ?
It will be always odd ?

<<I am not able to understand this>>

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.After the Civil War, contemporaries of Harriet Tubman’s maintained that she has all of the qualities of a great leader, coolness in the face of danger, an excellent sense of strategy, and an ability to plan in minute detail.

(A) Tubman’s maintained that she has

(B) Tubman’s maintain that she had

(C) Tubman’s have maintained that she had

(D) Tubman maintained that she hadD

(E) Tubman had maintained that she has

Ans

< Options A,B,C can be removed. , contemporaries of Harriet Tubman’s is wrong - redundant phrase>

< Option E uses both "had" and "has" so the sentence is partly in present tense and partly in past tense. >

So option D is correct i guess.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.After suffering $2 billion in losses and 25,000 layoffs, the

nation’s semiconductor industry, which makes chips that run everything
from computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears to have made
a long-awaited recovery.

(A) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears to have

(B) computers, spy satellites, and dishwashers, appears having

(C) computers, spy satellites, and dishwashers, appears that it has

(D) computers and spy satellites to dishwashers, appears that it has

(E) computers and spy satellites as well as dishwashers, appears to have

Ans

< Options B,C and E can be eliminated because the correct phrase is "From A to B". Options B,C and E do not have a "to".(from computers and spy satellites to dishwashers)>

<Between Option A and D, we can choose Option A because, it has the correct idiom - appears to... ->

So Option A is correct.

Hi All
I will be taking RC tomorrow from 10 to 1.

Shantanu, Ameen, Arvind, Amit and Deepthanu have already attended this class, so they need not come.
The others pl do make sure you attend.

Those who are taking the GMAT this month can come for whatever help/clarifications they need from the coming week on wards.
Pl decide among yourselves as to what class you need on which day. I can come on any pre-arranged day. But all of you must come on the same day, same time.

Thanks
Padmini
