The Mario Party series is a series of party games featuring the characters of the Super Mario franchise, in which four human- or computer-controlled characters compete in a board game interspersed with minigames. The series is known for its party game elements, including the often unpredictable multiplayer modes that allow play with up to four (and, in one case, eight) human players. The series was created under Nintendo's supervision by Hudson Soft and CAProduction, and was inaugurated on the Nintendo 64, where its first game launched in Japan on December 18, 1998, and in the West in early 1999.
Like most entries in the Mario Party series, if you're looking for a solid and dependable party game, this will absolutely do the job. The variety and silliness of the minigames is always a recipe for hilarity with friends, and Super Mario Party displays classic Nintendo charm. Yet despite the changes, some of the old Mario Party problems continue to linger, and it's unlikely to be a game you'll repeatedly return to in single-player mode. It does what it says on the tin, and does it well, but no more.
As Toad cheerfully informed me upon entering the party plaza, "it makes sense you would head straight for Mario Party," so I'll start by discussing the main 4-player Mario Party mode. Many fans will be delighted to hear Super Mario Party abandons the vehicle mechanic of its predecessors (which forced players to move around lumped together in a tiny cart). Instead, each player moves separately on a linear path, with some options to choose which route to take. The upside of this is increased competition, as players can make more tactical decisions. But the downside of ditching the cart is it revives one of Mario Party's oldest problems: the tedium of waiting for each individual to take their turn. Separate movement considerably slows the momentum between the minigames which form the heart of any Mario Party title. It's a trade-off that replaces one problem with another.

If you can get a group of people to play this game on a somewhat regular basis, then Super Mario Party is a great buy. It definitely isn't going to win any Game of the Year awards, but it could very well be the essential party game on the Switch for years to come. Here's hoping Nintendo decides to support this game with some extra content down the road to make it an even better party experience.

I wish I could go back to remembering Mario Party as a fun if not particularly amazing party game. One night has changed it all for me, and it feels good to say it: Mario Party is bad. In fact, it probably always has been.
Fan-favorite Nintendo 64 multiplayer game Mario Party 3 is finally making its way to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service. The Expansion Pack includes all the aforementioned consoles and also adds on the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis for an additional price. Nintendo includes a curated library of games for each of their consoles and adds more each month. This week, the service is finally giving fans access to a classic party game.
Everyone loves a fun round of Mario Party. While this classic board game was a hit on the N64, it hasn't been easily accessible to people who don't have, or don't want to hook up, that aging console. When you first boot up a fresh file of Mario Party, you will have access to six awesome boards themed around different Mario characters. Each one has a difficulty rating associated with them, with three stars being the most difficult.
