The Global Lab research group at the National Institute of Informatics, Tokyo, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence, with specific interests in developing real-time interactive systems and/or data analysis of human behavior in massively multiuser virtual 3D environments.

Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in informatics, computer science, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong research record evidenced by top-level publications and experience and willingness to manage a research team consisting of Master and Ph.D. course internship students staying at the lab for about 5-6 months.
The position is initially granted for the remainder of the current Japanese Fiscal Year (until end of March 2014). Extension is expected for the next Fiscal Year.

Salary is based on experience and Japanese Government policy. Note: Special conditions apply to German applicants, who can apply through the DAAD-NII Special Program (see link below).

The goal of the Global Lab research group and its “Virtual Living Lab” (VLL) project is to create better theories in transport and health by innovative “big data” collection in massively multiuser virtual 3D environments. The project is conducted in collaboration with non-informatics partners in traffic engineering, health technology, and sustainable energy from Japan and around the world. Most of the projects under the hood of the VLL have two complementary aspects. For instance, for a transport researcher, the VLL is an experimental space for science innovation in the transport domain; for the user, the VLL is a participatory space for entertaining interaction with other users, e.g. as a mobile social game.

We seek candidates who can work independently and have experience in software engineering and interactive system development and/or data analytics, a strong desire to publish in high-quality conferences and journals, and the ability and willingness to coordinate several internship students who assist the project.

Interested candidates should provide a CV and the names of three persons who can provide a letter of reference to hel...@nii.ac.jp
