Dear members of the IUI Announcements mailing list,
It is my sad duty to notify the IUI community of the loss of one of its most influential and admired members, Prof. John Riedl of the University of Minnesota. John's 3-year battle with melanoma, which he fought with his usual energy, ingenuity, and good humor, ended on July 15th.
The first of what will undoubtedly be many published tributes to John's life appeared last week at the following address:

In addition to being a recognized pioneer in the fields of recommender systems and social computing, John is one of the most widely cited researchers in the IUI field. He also served the community as an innovative program cochair of IUI 2005 and as founding coeditor-in-chief of the ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems.
John's legacy and the memory of his compelling personality will continue to inspire members of the IUI community for many years to come.
Sincerely yours,
Anthony Jameson
