Dear all
Dr. Rassmusen wrote me about there are some intentions for import B. terrestris to Peru (pollination of strawberries in greenhouse). The importations of B. terrestris in Chile continues and some wild populations are reaching the frontiers of Peru and Bolivia, but introduce B. terrestris in Peru can be a big problem for many south american bumblebees.
Best regards
Jose

Hi Jose,

Is there something we can do to express our concern about this?  Who would we write a letter to?

Cheers,
Sheila

Dear All,

Since this is not the first time this kind of threat has appeared and it won't be the last, and since we do have a Commercial Bumblebee Policy Statement on our position, can we move towards a protocol for how to respond to these threats? Would anyone be prepared to take on the role of developing this?

Many thanks, Paul

Maybe it would be useful to have a quick Skype chat or email exchange among interested parties (a small group, preferably).  Given that we have the statement, developing a protocol and running it should be relatively easy.  I’m happy to be involved and, possibly, take the lead on this, but it would be good to have an initial chat so that we head in the right direction.

Cheers

Hi all,
I will be happy to help.
My skype user is carolina.laura.morales
I am available for say, one hour in 4 hours (14:00 Argentina, UTC 03:00).
Yesterday I was thinking about it and I would like these two points to be considered in the discussion:
1) to effectively reach the decision makers (sanitary authorities), any release should be translated to the native language of the target country. Otherwise it will only be read by academics.
2) efforts should be directed both to importation countries as well as, to the  exportation countries.
By the way, the recent press release of the IPBES Pollination assessement, address this question of introduced pollinators among the five specific options to safeguard pollinators.
I guess  more details will be provided in the Summary for Policy Makers (not yet available).

I look forward to hear from you,
best regards
Carolina

Thanks Marina.

We now have 4 people, including you, which is, I think, a good number. I'll put a doodle poll found for a potential Skype next week.

My suggestion would be that together we draft a strategy and approach, and then get approval for it from the IUCN group, so that everyone has the chance for input.

Cheers

Paul- you've got a good group who can participate in a response to Claus' information about Peru import of B t. I'm still snowed under with family health issues, most recently the sudden death of my stepfather. I'm cc'ing to Jeff a so one of our Cons Genetics committee members.

        Dear all,

I will have no time to try to skype as my time table is full full.

I join here the early view issue of a paper from our lab and UFZ (first author Thomas Lecocq).

As it PRECISELY deals with the invasive potential of Bombus terrestris, it closely fits with the problem.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/conl.12215/abstract

Have a look on the remarkable predictability of the ssp. audax (previewed here as invasive in New Zealand, Tasmania, S. Chile and Argentina).  See fig. 2.

One by one, it looks that no one terrestris ssp could be able to invade Peru.  However, when taken the whole climatic enveloppe of the species, it includes it indeed.

Some strain traded by some bumblebee breeders belong to well defined sspp (e.g. dalmatinus, audax and canariensiss old by one breeder).  Some other breeders made a lot of interssp mixes, mainly between ssp. terrestris and ssp. dalmatinus.  Also, in S. America, after the initial release of  New-Zealand audax in Chile, it is clear that dalmatinus has been released.  I do not know  if the present wild terrestris from S. Argentina belong to audax or dalmatinus OR if they are hybrids.

It should look conservative to take the risk for Peru as "Bombus terrestris species level" (fig. 2).

It is very possible to reliably identify the ssp of strains, the most accurate tool being pheromone analysis.

        Bye, Pierre
Cheers

Mark
