One purpose of this community is to bring people together with common
interests. How can we collaborate if we don't know what everyone is
working on, right?
So give us a brief description of projects you're working on, thinking
about, or dreaming of. Maybe we can help each other out.

I am currently working on a browser-based strategy game through the
department of Telecommunications at IU. The concept is similar to
games like Tribal Wars, Travian, and Ikariam. There are about five or
six of us on the current team. We are currently running an open beta
with around 800 registered players. Since starting open beta, we have
been shifting our efforts from patching the current game to writing a
design document for a revised game.

In addition to balancing the rules, we are looking into a new setting
for the game. In the future, we would also like to take advantage of
services like Twitter and Facebook to promote the game.

I'm making plans to "build a better mousetrap" with regard to virtual
museums and art galleries and how to tie virtual spaces to real world
spaces along with virtual and tangible pieces of art.

Hi Rory,
I'm thrilled to see your post. I'm about to invite a slew of people,
many of whom are faculty without much experience in this world, to
join this group. These folks will have interest, ideas, and
enthusiasm, but they won't necessarily have any idea how to put them
into practice. We need plenty of folks who can actually make this
stuff work to form the collaborations that will be necessary to make
effective games and virtual world experiences commonplace at IU.

I took a look at Greenland and read all of the lore. It definitely
appeals to the medieval-ophile in me, but lately I've been spending my
online time in SL, trying to become less of a newb and hunting down as
many science sims as I can find.

Thanks,
maggie

I'm leading a team of approximately 40 students, faculty and other
interested parties who are building a massive, commercial, narrative-
driven virtual world set in Victorian London called Londontown. We are
currently creating our virtual slice, the Crystal Palace, in Hyde
Park. Once the Crystal Palace is complete, and assuming there is still
money left in the United States, we intend to use the vertical slice
as a sales tool to secure funding to build the entire virtual world.

I'm designer and writer of the alternate reality games The Skeleton
Chase and Skeleton Chase 2: The Psychic under a grant from the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation. Jeanne Johnson in HPER is PI. Anne Massey in
Kelley is co-PI. Skeleton Chase 2:The Psychic is in its third of seven
weeks. We are researching the efficacy of using ARGs to make students
fitter and healthier.

Funded by the College of Arts & Sciences Professor Edward Castronova,
my colleague in the Department of Telecommunications, and I are
organizing the Virtual Worlds Workshop (VW2 2009), an intensive week-
long conference coming this summer to teach practical and sensible
virtual world construction and managemnent for business, research and
the classroom.

I'm involved as designer/writer in three other proposals for ARGs,
including one for public schools in Capetown, South Africa.

Hi All, and Happy New Year to you.

It's been a while since Sarah first asked the members of the IU Games and VirtualWorlds discussion group for a description of your current projects; I was wondering if any of you have a couple of moments to post a short update on your progress so far.

If you haven't had the chance yet to add your project to the list, please feel free.

Thanks,
Roger

Hi Roger,

I am very interested in using software from Vertical Learning Curve (http://www.vlcglobal.com/) in my S400 course.  I met with one of their representatives, Trish Zylstra, over the semester break.  She has set up a test account for their MIS and E-Commerce course.  I hope to be able to work through the course in the next month and make a decision whether I want to use it in the fall 2011.  It will cost $150 per student, which is about $50 less than the book that I am currently using.
