Hi!

My name is Daniel and I am a environmental engineering master-student at the university of Luleå (LTU) in Sweden. I am currently looking for a open source distributed software which is capable of simulating coupled sewer and surface flow in a urban environment. I read about the study of the flood in Hull, has the code been tested in other urban areas with extensive sewer networks?

My idea for my master thesis would be to create a 1D sewer model in SWMM and couple it with Itzi for a small urban area and compare the result to a widely used commercial software. To see if Itzi could be used in some cases as an alternative tool for flood risk assessment.

I am also wondering how steep the learning curve is for GRASS and just general code management as I do not have any previous coding or GRASS experience. I have worked in SWMM and ArcGIS during my studies.

Best regards, Daniel Lundqvist

Hi Daniel,

That is an interesting topic. Itzï is already integrating SWMM with bidirectional coupling. It is still a bit rough around the edges, but it mostly work. AFAIK, two master thesis have already been written using this capacity.
I have a plan to improve and simplify the drainage coupling by using OWA SWMM, but I did not had the time to finish it so far. It would be great if you could work on that piece of software. I can provide guidance if you wish to do so.
You can have a look at my doctorate thesis if you want more details about the current implementation and an application in Kolkata:

Best regards,
Laurent

Hi,

Interested to know more about this project. I'm also planning on doing a research on the combined simulation of fluvial and pluvial flooding using FOSS and compare the results with that of the leading related commercial software.

Thank you,

Allex
