Hi Joan - Thank you for all that you do to keep our neighborhood informed.  It's greatly appreciated.

I have questions about the repaving of roads following the year plus of utility and gas line work in the neighborhood that I hope could be raised at tonight's meeting.  I live on Myopia Road and last month I was encouraged to learn that Austin Street and the surrounding roads would be repaved, however the results to date have been disappointing and unacceptable.  It seems as though the pavers just tore up the sections that were previously dug up for the gas work and repaved them poorly. The repaved strips are uneven and the streets are now full of bumps.  West Street is just as bad.  Has the quality of the repatching work been approved by BTD? Why was Summer Street the only road repaved from curb to curb?  Could someone explain why the roads were just poorly repatched and not completely repaved?

I'm hoping this might just be an interim step before the roads can be fully repaved in the spring, but we haven't received any information about what they are doing and why.

The repaving work also resulted in many days in which Myopia and surrounding roads were closed all day without any notice.  On other days, Myopia became a cut through road with cars dangerously travelling the wrong way down our one way street.  I respect that BPD is quite busy, but why aren't the utility companies required to pay for adequate police details to ensure safe traffic flow or required to fully repave our roads from curb to curb?  Our neighborhood has also had to bear the brunt of the rerouting and detours related to the Cleary Sq. bridge closure, and I believe our neighborhood deserves completely repaved roads.

Thank you,
Tim Galvin

Thanks, Tim. If you are at the meeting, please be sure to bring this up. If you can't make the meeting, we will be sure it gets on the agenda. The last time we asked about this the snow had put a damper on continued work; we will pursue a request for additional updates.

Appreciate you raising the question!

Joan

Hi All,

Apologies for missing last night's meeting. I was able to forward Tim's concerns to the Public Works Department, and they informed me that the following streets in the area will be resurfaced this season:
  • Austin Street (From West Street to Gordon Avenue)
  • West Street (From Austin Street to Deforest Street)
  • Harvard Avenue (From Everett Street to River Street)
  • Maple Street (From RIver Street to Walnut Street)
  • Oak Street (From Maple Street to Hyde Park Avenue)
The Public Works Department also has several more streets in Hyde Park they are planning to resurface, however they will have to coordinate with Eversource as they have some ongoing and planned work in certain areas of the neighborhood. I have asked that they add Myopia Road to their list for resurfacing in the near future, and that advanced notice be given to residents in the area for street closures. I'll be sure to share any updates as they become available.

Best,
Gabe

Thanks, Tim, for your question about road paving. I missed the meeting but I share your concerns. I've been in HP for 30 years and my observation is that because of ongoing work roads get repaved only to be broken up again for another repair or upgrade. At least repairs are being done but it would be nice to have spanking new roads for at least a few years.

Hopeful,
Karen Baldassare
