Guest Speaker Jordan Rich, Boston Age Strong (AS) Commission
Boston's Age Strong (AS) Commission offers a variety of resources for older residents (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission). It is made up of a number of units:

The Constituent Services Team offers assistance with many issues (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/how-age-strong-can-help-you). For example, AS advocates can help with accessing and applying for various benefits (e.g., SNAP—Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—benefits). Call 617-635-4366 (main number) or contact Yves Jean, the Hyde Park advocate, at 617-635-0021 / yvesma...@boston.gov to set up an appointment.

The Housing Team can help with housing support and housing applications, fuel assistance applications and application renewals, housing court advocacy, and more (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/housing-support-older-adults). Call 617-635-4366 for more information.

The Transportation Team helps connect older adults to all of the transportation options available to them (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/transportation-options-older-adults). For example, AS offers free, wheelchair-accessible shuttle service to medical appointments for residents age 60 and older (call the shuttle line at 617-635-3000 to make a reservation asap after you make your medical appointment). Fifty percent–off taxi coupons for Boston-registered taxis are also available for residents age 60 and older ($10 in rides costs $5). Call the main number or the Hyde Park advocate to learn more.

The Volunteer Unit can connect you to a variety of volunteer opportunities based on your interests, location, and preferred time commitment (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/volunteer-opportunities-older-people). Included is the Older Adult Property Tax Work-Off Program (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/senior-property-tax-work), which allows qualified homeowners to work off up to $2,000 on their property tax bill by offering volunteer services to the City of Boston. Call the main number or contact Joseph Goncalves at joseph.g...@boston.gov to learn more about volunteer opportunities.

The Events and Programming Team holds a number of events every year for older residents and can connect you to programs and outings that enrich your life. Go to https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/events-and-engagement-older-adults, call the main number, or contact the Hyde Park advocate to learn more about participating in or sponsoring an event.

The benefit-of-the month program offers a different program each month (call the main number or contact the Hyde Park advocate to learn more). For April: April 16 from 12–2pm AS will be offering health care proxy clinics at various branches of the Boston Public Library to help community members understand the importance of designating a health care proxy (HCP) and potentially signing a HCP form at the event. One of the clinics will be held at the BPL Roslindale branch at 4246 Washington Street (register at bit.ly/hcproxyROS). Call the main number or contact the Hyde Park advocate to learn more.

For more information on Age Strong LGBTQIA+ and Pride events/programs, contact Bob Linscott at 617-635-4250 / robert....@boston.gov. Call the main number or contact the Hyde Park advocate to learn more.

Age-Friendly Boston partners with Boston’s public agencies, businesses, cultural, educational, religious institutions, and community groups to provide resources for older residents (https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/age-friendly-boston). Its dementia-friendly work considers the needs of older residents and care partners with memory loss. Call the main number or contact the Hyde Park advocate to learn more.

Boston Seniority magazine covers topics of interest to older Bostonians. To sign up for email delivery, scroll to the bottom of https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/boston-seniority-magazine#sign-up-for-updates. Although AS cannot mail hard copies of the magazine to individual residents, a limited number of each issue are printed and distributed to various locations in each neighborhood (contact the Hyde Park advocate for a list of locations).

To sign up for email blasts or learn about other ways to connect with AS, go to https://www.boston.gov/departments/age-strong-commission/connect-us-age-strong, call the main number, or contact the Hyde Park advocate.

Gabe Cruz, Councilor Pepén's office
Gabe: gabrie...@boston.gov; Councilor Pepén: enriqu...@boston.gov
Thanks to Gabe for helping to expedite needed pot hole filling on the roadway leading to the West Street bridge.

Q. Why was the River Street bridge closed a few days ago?
A. A wire in the Hyde Park commuter rail station exploded; the bridge reopened as soon as the repair was made.
