A day after a 17-year-old girl was gang raped by three men at Kalyan,
crime branch have arrested two accused whose chilling confessional has
left no room for doubt that our bustling railway stations are no
longer safe for anyone.
In their statement to the police, the arrested duo reportedly said
that the teenaged victim was taken to the roof of a platform at Kalyan
station and raped for over two hours. Investigations have revealed
that the accused also operate as robbers on long-distance trains.
On Tuesday, a 17-year-old resident of Dombivli approached the
Government Railway Police and alleged that she had been raped by three
men. Though the railway cops immediately registered a case of rape,
when they found that she was outside the platform when she was
abducted, they transferred the case to Mahatma Phule police station.
Sources say railway cops were largely relying on the girl’s statement
in which she said that she was taken out of the station and raped.
However, On Wednesday, Kalyan crime branch managed to arrest two
accused who told the cops that they had abducted the girl from the CST
end of platform no 1 at Kalyan.
“She was with her friend when the trio spotted her. They approached
the couple and assaulted the boy with a blade. The boy fled from the
spot leaving the girl alone,” said inspector RC Patil, whose team
arrested the two accused. He explained that while the friend was on hi
way to the police station, the trio took the girl towards a railway
overhead bridge. “Once atop they got on to the roof of platform no. 1
through the gap in the railings. They stuffed the girls’ mouth with a
piece of cloth and for the next two hours took turns in raping her,”
said Patil.
The triotook the girl towards a railway overhead bridge and then
climbed the roof of platform no. 1 through a gap in the railings
Patil explained that the 17-year-old, who has just completed her HSC,
ran away from home on June 20, after her a heated argument with her
family over her friendship with a boy. She left for Pune to be with
her friend.
However, next day she left Pune on the Chennai Mumbai Express, which
arrives at Kalyan at around 2 am. Sources say, at Kalyan, she called
her friend Devendra, who stays in the vicinity to give her company at
the station, as the next train to Dombivli was only at 4.30 am.
The three accused spotted the couple while they were waiting for the
train. Sources reveal that the CST end of the platform is deserted and
popular with local thugs and drug addicts.
Crime branch was able to make a breakthrough in the case after
constable Prabhakar Borade, acted on a tip off from one of his
sources.
“I got a lead from a mobile thief I had arrested recently. We went to
the spot where the suspects normally hang out and detained one Zakir
Jamil Khan,” said Borade. During the interrogation Zakir claimed that
while he was with the other two accused he did not touch the girl as
he was scared. He led the cops to another accused, Anil Kumar Pathak.
The cops are on the lookout for the third accused Babu. The three
accused are small-time vendors who also steal from passengers on long
distance trains.
