"it's electric" version 1.8 is now available at
http://tupelo-schneck.org/its-electric
http://code.google.com/p/its-electric/

A number of changes:

(1) The server (Java program) should better handle the coming DST
change. In the past its-electric could lose an hour's worth of data
the night of the change, as the TED Gateway seems to broadcast 1am to
2am twice. Its-electric should now do a better job of guessing
whether TED means 1am to 2am standard time or daylight time. Also, if
you want it to be foolproof, you can turn off DST at the Gateway, but
still instruct its-electric to serve data according to the local time
with DST, using new options to separately set the time zone of the
both the Gateway and the its-electric server. Details at
http://code.google.com/p/its-electric/wiki/TimeZoneAndDstIssues .

(2) Another new server option is --delete-until, which causes
its-electric to delete all data up to the given time. For instance I
just used "--delete-until 2009-11-01" which deleted a rogue data point
in January 2009 which somehow got in. This could also be used by
people who only want to keep more recent data. Best to backup your
data first, and remember you can do a hot backup (while its-electric
is running) if you copy the database files in alphabetical order.

(3) It is now possible to turn off short imports (which import from
TED just the seconds since the last short import) or long imports
(which import a whole hour's worth of data) using --import-interval 0
or --long-import-interval 0. This could be used by people who want
more control over how much network traffic there is between
its-electric and the TED Gateway.

(4) The web page client now has checkboxes to hide/show individual MTUs.

(5) My original goal with its-electric was to have a constantly
running display which is always updating to show the most recent data.
Because of memory leaks, however, leaving the its-electric page
running too long would make the browser unresponsive. This problem is
mostly fixed. There seem to be some memory leaks which are the fault
of the Google Annotated Time Line itself, however. As a workaround,
if the updating display is still set to the initialZoom from the
its-electric-config.js file, it will reload the page every hour, which
eliminates all memory leakage built up in the interim.

Coming attractions: for 1.8.1, I'm hoping to implement Don Auker's
idea of a display like Google PowerMeter used. And I'll be working on
its-electric for the Current Cost.

Enjoy!
