Ihave tried all the solutions from Creative Assembly; however, as I suspected, the culprit is the Intel Arc GPU. My iGPU has no issues (but it's practically unplayable due to lag with iGPU). The only campaign that doesn't have this problem is Hannibal at the Gates. Custom battles/multiplayer battles work fine, but do get a black screen after a couple battles (resolved by restarting the game).
4. To reproduce, simply launch Total War: Rome 2 Emperor Edition on Steam, start the Grand Campaign, and skip the cut scene intro. You will be left with audio effects that indicate the game is working, however you will only see a cursor and nothing else. This problem persists on all campaigns except Hannibal at the Gates.
Lowering the texture quality from ultra to high has fixed the problem; however, I am still curious to know why ultra textures are fine on Hannibal at the Gates but results in a black screen with audio, cursor, and game interactivity on other campaigns.
If you continue to experience this issue after performing the avise troubleshooting steps, open a new thread as the owner if this thread seems unresponsive the thread will no longer be monitored. Thank you for your understanding.
before closing this thread, we want to let you know that we followed the instructions from the original post and tried to replicate this issue, however, the game worked fine and no black screen or any other issue occur during the gameplay session. We would recommend that you do a clean Operating System installation and in case the issue persists, please contact the game developer since this seems unlikely to be a driver issue.

When playing Total War: Rome II's different campaigns, the game goes to a black screen without any visuals besides the cursor and audio, which still seems to update as if interacting with the game. This happens at a few different points in the campaign but most commonly when loading into a battle from the campaign map, or when loading back to the campaign map from the end of a battle. I tried a few different campaigns and went straight into a faction's starting battle and this occurred each time (Grand Campaign, Imperator Augustus, Rise of the Republic) Wrath of Sparta seemed to play fine with a quick test. I can however play custom battles perfectly fine it seems.
I am using driver version 31.0.101.4826 with an Arc A750. A few files are attached showing system specs and game settings. Also, I am on the most up to date versions of my BIOS and Windows 11.
This can be reproduced most reliably by loading into the Grand Campaign and attempting to play a battle (The factions I tested were Rome and the Arverni). If the glitch does not occur loading into the battle, play through the battle and it might occur when loading back to the campaign map after the battle (This is what happened in the Rise if the Republic campaign). All of these instances happened during the first attempted battle of the campaign (Minus the case of Wrath of Sparta which had no issue in its first attempted battle).
I have also attached a video of the glitch occurring. However, in the recording, the screen does not go black, it instead continues to show the loading screen. From my perspective the screen was black, and you can see when this happens when I start to circle my cursor around after the loading progress bar has filled.
That driver version was released the same day that I made my post so I didn't see it at the time. After updating using DDU, the issue still seems to persist. Let me know if there is any other information I can give to help find a solution.
After a bit more tinkering, the game will load into a campaign on the settings that I shared, seemingly without issue, but if I change any settings, it will black screen when loading with the new settings. For example, I changed the 'water' setting to 'high' from 'very high.' The screen went black after trying to load the changes. I then restarted the game and attempted the same change and the game loaded fine. So there seems to be some issue with the loading process, not necessarily the specific settings used. The same thing happened when changing the 'trees,' 'terrain,' and 'texture filtering' settings at different points of that process; either when first making the change, or when reverting back to what it was originally set to.
It's been three months since I made my original post requesting help with this issue. I recently updated to driver version 31.0.101.5084 and the issue still persists. I just want to ask if the issue is still being looked into or if I will have to write off being able to play this game at this point. If there is any more information I can provide to help solve the issue, please let me know.
I'm not sure if you should write it off just yet. Theres so many similar posts about Rome 2 and Attila and all the other pre Warhammer 1 total war games just not working on ARC. I bought and Arc A770 and A750 (both LEs) a few months apart to replace old RX 480 8gbs in a 10th and 11th gen intel system 8 months into Arcs lifespan for the first purchase. I had a rough time in the first few months in some games (like League would crash for me for no reason every 5 games) but intel has been working very hard trying to fix the drivers and I've seen them improved significantly. My guess is this is less of an Intel issue and more of a CA/Sega issue. Its been put on full blast that they only care about the bottom line offering terrible products by rehashing old assets (and their bugs) and theyve been doing it since Empire in an unsustainable fashion. Pharaoh's sales are so bad because the fanbase knows theyre just talking Troy assets and doing what they can with them rather than doing Medieval 3 something better they dont have any assets for. Rome 2 and Attila are said to work in Direct X Vulkan if you mod the game files to use Vulkan API but I can't actually show you where or how to do that its just mentioned in the forums everywhere, so we at least know it can be done.
I have recently encountered this bug on my Intel Serpent Canyon NUC. That uses an Arc 770M 16GB. I was able to get the game to run by moving the texture quality from Ultra down to Very High. In game, the textures flicker or look like they haven't been fully loaded in.
Problem: Some games cause loss of signal/black screen of depression to occur during gameplay, either at the start or after sometime. During black screen, I can still hear in-game/system sounds but PC is totally unresponsive. Graphic card fans start spinning at almost top speed even though card itself it typically warm at best. Only hard reset helps and occasionally graphic card drivers do not properly load after reboot, requiring additional reboot or turn-off/turn-on. The thing is I currently get this problem even in games I used to play for years with no issue, like Total War Warhammer II.
No manual OC, maybe factory OC, but I can```t tell really. In most cases it is warm at most during my tests - load OS, quickly run then game, get black screen. Radeon software never showed it getting even close to overheating, though sensors on card itself might be malfunctioning. Then again a can play some pretty graphically intense games for hours with no problems, so I doubt it is overheating.
Turns up tomorrow for me to fit and try. I wonder if it will fix the issue.
nothing else i tried has resolved the issue so far so i was very surprised when the card worked in the other pc so i am thinking it is not the card itself hence ordering new psu. i will update once i have fitted it, fingers crossed.
I followed this that I found on YouTube and it has fixed mine. Just note that each time there's a driver update you'll need to do it again. Once I did it I saved the profile under the title of -8 then you can quickly load a profile each time.
I have a Radeon RX 480, very similar to your cards and the is the Gaming X OC edition from MSI. I will see if I can find a older post of where I showed another user my pictures of how the thermal paste should look after re-applying it.
But, I can ensure you I have experienced this issue a lot in the past and every-time it required me to neatly re-apply thermal paste. In addition, the solution is not under-volting or lower clocks like a lot of people do, airflow is your issue and summer. After months of troubleshooting, the best solution is to buy a case such as Cooler-Master ARGB MB 511 which has three front intake fans (very important) and at least one at the top-rear, a single 120mm top-back mounted Liquid Cooler is also beneficial.
Furthermore, you cannot put a Polaris GPU in a case which has hard-drives blocking front-intakes, a Polaris GPU (RX 400 / RX 500) needs strong-, unrestricted- airflow from the whole front of the case, or a much older design which has a side fan blowing directly onto the RX 580. The matter of fact is Polaris GPU's cannot cool themselves down, you need to assist them with strong airflow from the front.
So, my suggestion is firstly, neatly replace the thermal paste on the GPU if you are confident, not with the line method shown by Linus, you need to spread those stuff out neatly with the included thermal paste shovel and you need to perfectly mount the heat-sink again without smudging the paste and safely tighten the screws again. Secondly, get a modern case with three intake fans such as the CM MB511 which has mess in-front of it to allow exterior air.
