According to reports, the sixth and tenth class textbooks no longer include lessons on card games like rummy, following demands from academics, teachers, and political leaders in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The syllabus for class sixth, third semester Math Textbook gave examples using playing cards; the integers chapters taught students addition and subtraction through playing cards, while the class tenth students had lessons for statistics and facts with card decks.

Starting this academic year, the lessons containing examples through playing cards have been removed and replaced with new examples. According to reports, the examples were swapped with coloured flowers instead of playing cards.

In statistics, the examples of picking a random card were also removed, and only rolling a die and flipping a coin are left in the new textbooks. The changes were made due to recent suicides in the state due to online rummy. The people urged that these examples in textbooks encouraged these kinds of activities.

The Tamil Nadu government recently banned online games like rummy and poker in the state through a new bill called the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill.

The first time the bill was sent to Governor RN Ravi, he returned it without giving his assent, saying that the state does not have the authority to pass the bill and ban online games. Law Minister S Regupathy clarified that the state can pass the bill, and it will be passed again and sent back to the Governor.

Governor Ravi gave his assent after the bill was re-enacted and came into effect across the state, banning online games, including skill games like Rummy and Poker. Only the games that did not have a monetary aspect are allowed under the law.

CHENNAI: With Tamil Nadu schools set to reopen on June 6, the school education department is taking steps to provide uniforms, textbooks and notebooks to students on the same day and within a couple of days.

As per the circular from the department, the education department on Friday announced that the schools will reopen on June 6 from classes 1 to 12, which was in fact postponed due to general election results scheduled on June 4.

Subsequently, measures are already in place to provide 14 free items usually given to government school students. As per department officials, the textbooks and uniforms will be ensured that children get on the same day of school reopening.

"We will send the uniforms and textbooks before the school commences to respective educational blocks. So that teachers can collect it before the school reopens and distribute it on time, "said an official.

Also, to address concerns regarding uniforms of government school children, the respective school management committee (SMC) and former students have collaborated to provide better uniforms for the students.

"The SMC members and former students should be coordinated by the principals and the SMC meeting should be held in all the 50 selected schools given in different districts and after consultation, the decision should be taken to carry out uniform sewing for the students, "the notification from the department stated in April.

New Delhi: Starting from the academic year 2024-25, school children will be studying from new, updated textbooks as the education ministry is all set to release the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for all levels in the coming months, ThePrint has learnt.

The NCF is a set of curricular guidelines, a key component of the new National Education Policy (NEP). So far, the ministry has released NCF for the foundational level, which is pre-school to Class 2. NCF for other levels will be released in the coming months, according to which the books will be updated, a senior education ministry official told ThePrint on condition of anonymity.
