The Reddersons had expected to spend the day in the hospital. Again. Like almost every other day since Aug. 1 when Kyle was born with so many intestinal problems that he nearly died. The infant already has lived through six surgeries and three feeding tubes.
Booking an outing with RideLKN is an absolute must this summer. Whether you are looking to cruise around the lake, go tubing, or learn how to wakesurf, or wakeboard it is an amazing experience. We did a 4-hour captained boat ride with wake surfing lessons and some fun on the tube! Kyle and Kyle were awesome guides who made our experience great. They were so energetic and encouraging while teaching us. I have been attempting to wake surf for at least five summers, and I learned more in my time with Kyle than I ever have! If you listen to their direction and tips you are going to get up and surf no problem. Time flies when you're having fun and no matter what type of experience you are looking for on Lake Norman, RideLKN is a fantastic choice!
My experience with RideLKN was so fun! It was my first time ever going on a boat and doing watersports (besides swimming!) so I was pretty nervous. However, the instructors gave me the encouragement I needed to try new activities out and get on the water. Wakesurfing was very difficult at first, but I kept making progress and improving each time thanks to helpful feedback from the instructors. I had a great time and hope I get to try it again soon. Whether you're a beginner or expert in wakeboarding and wakesurfing, you'll have a great time with RideLKN!
I had a great experience at RideLKN! I am a lover of boating but I have not had the opportunity to wake surf prior to our session. The Captains were amazing and helped us through it all. I have to say it was a struggle at first, considering it was my first time but the staff at RideLKN made our experience very enjoyable! I eventually was able to get up on the waves and it was a blast. I can't wait to get back out this summer and progress my surfing skills.
RideLKN was fantastic! The captains were incredibly informative and encouraging throughout the experience. They had a thorough understanding of the lake, boats, and all water activities. I felt fully supported and encouraged the entire time I was in the water. Their motto, "Progress is everything," was drilled into us, which was really nice, as it emphasized that as long as you were willing to try, you were doing well.
My experience with Ride LKN was fantastic! Going into this trip, I had no prior experience with wake surfing and was a little nervous to try. But, our captains, the Kyle's, were so helpful and kind. With their guidance, I was able to pick up wake surfing quickly! They let us customize our lake day, offering wake surfing, boarding, tubing, or just riding around in the boat. I had such a fun experience riding in the boat on Lake Norman, watching my fellow colleagues tube, and learning how to wake surf!
Though I have some experience in boating and watersports, I am no expert. I felt more confident to try new things with the guidance from the Ride LKN team . I was so excited to share it with our summer marketing team and wish we could have been out a couple more hours longer. If you are hesitant to the amount of time to book, I'd recommend at least 4 hours with groups over 4 people. You don't want to cut your time short and wished you could have booked longer. Thanks again Ride LKN for having us and the amazing hospitality!
This was my second excursion with RideLKN and it is always an amazing time with them. I'm not much of a water person -- I can't even swim..(when I do, I always have a life jacket on). So when it comes to watersports, I get extremely anxious. But our captains create such a friendly and fun atmosphere that pushes you out of your comfort zone and it turns into one of the best days you'll ever have. I only tried wakeboarding during my first outing with them, but this time, I got to wakesurf. Yes, there were a couple failed attempts, but it eases my mind knowing that the water will catch my fall. And after some encouragement and some simple tips from the instructors, I was up in no time gliding across the waters. And I definitely improved since the first time! For anyone interested in finding something new and fun to try, I would 100% recommend taking lessons from RideLKN. Whether you want to just try it once for fun or make it a hobby, you will absolutely love it out here!
The study, which appears in the online journal PLoS ONE, suggests that this early-stage dormancy phenomenon contributes to the failure of artesunate alone, or even combined with other drugs, to eliminate the mosquito-borne disease. Alexis LaCrue, PhD, research associate in the USF Department of Global Health, is the lead author of the study, which was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
The emergence of parasites resistant to artesunate therapy along the Thai-Cambodian border could seriously undermine the success of global malaria control efforts, the World Health Organization has reported.
"There is an urgent public health need to understand why this antimalarial drug resistance is happening and the basis for it, so we can help arrest its spread," said principal investigator Dennis Kyle, PhD, distinguished university health professor at the USF College of Public Health.
"Our study was able to induce the same dormant stage in vivo -- in a rodent malaria model -- that was previously seen only in the test tube," Kyle said. "The work suggests that dormancy is involved in the earliest stage of parasite development in the red blood cells. It may be a new mechanism for how the parasite avoids being wiped out by artemisinin drugs."
When mice infected with rodent malaria parasites were treated with artesunate, dormant parasites were present in their red blood cells 24 hours following treatment. The researchers also found a positive association between the number of dormant parasites present and when malaria infection re-emerged in the mice.
"Now that we have a robust animal model for studying how the parasites become dormant and then recover," Kyle said, "we may be able to change our dosing regimens and investigate drug partners for artemisinin that are better at killing the dormant parasites."
Malaria parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. In humans, they enter red blood cells and start replicating after being released from the disease's first target, the liver. Once parasites escape into the bloodstream, disease symptoms emerge including chills, fever, headache, body aches, vomiting and exhaustion.
Malaria affects 10 percent of the world's population, killing nearly one million people a year in developing countries and crippling their economies. Most who die or become ill are poor pregnant women and children under age 5 in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and South America.
