Hello all. Here are a few project ideas for you to work on over the
summer and also for your final year project. If you need any guidance,
you can contact me or your teachers for the respective subjects.

1. Design of a regenerative motored bike system: This project deals
with the design of a bicycle with a dynamo where the light at the end
of the dynamo is replaced with a battery. The battery is charged when
the bike is running and when the biker feels tired, the stored energy
can be used to drive the motor on the bike.

2. Design of a local language search engine: This project deals with
the development of a local language search engine on the lines of
Google search. Since Google searches only English websites, there is
significant business opportunity in the local language search engine
space. This could be used to pool data from local language newspapers
and build a news aggregator like Google News.

3. Design a crowd sourced traffic alert system: This project deals
with the development of a traffic alert system for real time traffic
alerts. Registered users could upload photographs of the streets they
are on at any time to a central server. The server will collect the
GPS information from the photograph and update a local map with the
traffic data extracted from the photograph using image processing
algorithms. This would require a smart phone application and server to
host the website.

4. Development of re-configurable ad hoc wireless sensor networks:
This project deals with the development of a hardware and software for
re-configurable wireless sensor networks which could add additional
nodes and re-configure to meet threats such as low batteries on
collectors in real time.

5.) Development of magnetic flux meters to detect power leakages,
shorts and opens in electrical cables: This project deals with the
development of a magnetic flux sensor that could detect the AC current
in the electrical cables using Faraday's induction. This could be used
for power measurements and detection of power thefts.

6. Development of a VITERBI decoder on an FPGA platform: This project
deals with the development of a VITERBI decoder on an FPGA platform
with implementation of soft Maximum Likelihood decoding. These are
used in modern CDMA systems. Performance of the system could be
optimized and extensions to 4G systems could be developed. Project has
been discussed in the semester 6 EC class during Digital
Communications lectures.

7. Development of gesture recognition system using the web camera that
could be used as input device in place of the mouse.

8. Development of parallel algorithms of existing numerical techniques
for implementation on parallel processors such as NVIDIA CUDA GPUs.
These could be used for advanced scientific computing and improving
performance of existing solvers that use numerical techniques.

9. Another proposal discussed with the semester 6 ECE students deals
with identifying orthogonal codes such as the HADAMARD Code for CDMA
systems. Presently used GOLD codes have a finite but low cross
corelation property and this produces interference that limits the
number of users on the system.

Development of orthogonal codes such as the Hadamard Code could give 0
cross corelation and thus lead to increased number of users on
existing CDMA systems.

10. Another project proposal discussed deals with the development of
energy harvesting systems such as peizo electric transducers for
mechanical pressure and antennae for ambient RF energy.

Here are a few resources you will find useful if you want to work on
Wireless Sensor Networks:

1. Reconfigurable Component-based Middleware for Networked Embedded
Systems, Paolo Costa, Geoff Coulson, Cecilia Mascolo, Luca Mottola,
Gian Pietro Picco and Stefanos Zachariadis:
http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/41857/1/JWIN06.pdf
--This is based on the European RUNES project (Reconfigurable
Ubiquitous Networked Embedded Systems)

2. Middleware: Middleware Challenges and Approaches for Wireless
Sensor Networks: Salem Hadim, Nader Mohamed, Stevens Institute of
Technology: ftp://143.54.11.3/pub/geyer/POD/artigos/POD-2009-1-TL2/POD-2009-1-TL2-Gisele-middlewareWirelessSensorNet.pdf

3. Wireless Sensor Network Designs by Anna HAc:

Let me know if you need any help on any of these projects. You can
work on them by yourself if you so wish.

Regards--
