Monster Hunter: Evolve is a fan-game created by Swanstermeister. It takes place after the events of World and Iceborne, and follows the journey of a new hunter bravely exploring deeper into the continent known as the New World. What follows is a DEEP dive into the plot of the game

Many years after the events of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the Research Commission has turned Seliana and Astera into thriving ports of trade between the Old World and the New. The Sapphire Star has become the Leader of the Research Comission, serving back in the Old World to guard the ships passing from there and the New World ports from attacks by monsters.

In this time of prosperity, the Commission can now focus on exploring deeper into the heart of the New World. Having scraped together a small team of ace hunters, researchers, scholars and technicians (including the player character), the Field Team Leader (now Commander) sends you far beyond the mountains of the Elders Recess and into the new lands.

The main hub will be the Exploratory Airship, with a small settlement called Wyvernsnest being erected near the first locale, the Grand Mountains. The New Hunter will prove their worth by descending into the Grand Mountains to hunt and gather materials. Once you have gained the trust of the Head Explorer, the leader of the expedition, you will be given a small one man airship that allows you to fast travel to locales across a larger world map. Using this you will travel to the next zone, The Thundering Plains. After investigating and cataloguing some of the species present (hunting some large monster natives), the local Grimalkynes will inform you of 'glowing clouds' that have been appearing in the night sky as of late. After bringing this news to the Head Explorer, the Exploratory Airship will take you to the third locale, The Cloud Forest. Here you will be have to aid a local tribe of wyverian and humans, who call themselves the Cloud Children. The Monsters of the Cloud Forest have been especially aggressive, and must be taken care of. After fighting the various monsters in several quests, the 'Glowing Clouds' can be seen again. Travelling to a peak where the clouds are emanating, you will find a single Cloud Child looking after a large glowing egg that seems to be made of plants and vines. It is this that is sending off the Glowing Clouds.

The Cloud Guardian, as she is called, explains that this egg belongs to a Sylvar Eternis, a mythical Elder Dragon. She explains that like Safi'jiiva and Shara Ishvalda, this Elder Dragon is believed to be an incarnation of one of the Dragons in the Tale of the Five, specifically the one that became the forest. However unlike safi and Shara, it is benevolent and cares for nature and the people of the New World. It entrusted its egg to the Cloud Children, after the troubling news that fiery comets had attacked the Sylvar Eternis' original nest. When you come back and relay your findings to the Head Explorer, he replies that the same fiery comets have been seen in the Thundering Plains and Grand Mountains. Leaving the Exploratory Airship at the Cloud Children sanctuary, you travel to those respective zones to deal with the comets. It is then that you will fight their respective Apex Predators, after already defeating the apex of the Cloud Forest before seeing the egg.

Returning to the Sanctuary, you are greeted with the news that a team went out to investigate the source of the comets and never came back. Rushing to find them, you discover the fourth and final story locale, The Ashlands. After sighting some local monsters similar to (Uragaan, Dodogama and Lavasioth in the Recess back in world), you find the team. They tell tales of a terrifying elder dragon with eyes of flame that attacked them. Upon returning to their camp, they tell you more of this Elder Dragon which they have named Fauregan. You travel into a new area of the Ashlands to find this beast, slaying it after a ferocious fight. Upon killing it, a small flight of Teostra and Lunastra take to the skies, flying away. It seems they were hiding from the Fauregan during the confrontation. After tracking them and several other elders down and defeating them, you are informed that the Ashlands has been suffering huge volcanic activity, spewing gouts of lava and comets to a certain location; The Nest of Sylvar Eternis.

Upon reaching the nest, you see the Sylvar try and protect itself from the comets and fiery rain. An attempt is made by the Airship to destroy the comets before they hit the creature, with you using ballistae and cannons to destroy them. However it seems to be in vain, as the Sylvar Eternis collapses, seemingly dead. Just at that moment, a massive beast bursts from the ground, downing the Airship and rendering the crew unconscious save you. The beast is the mighty Asu'mogiddean, a creature of lava and earth straight from legend. The fight commences. At around half health, the Asu'modiddean with suddenly be hit by a barrage of vines as the very much alive (if heavily wounded) Sylvar Eternis joins the fight. Hunter and Monster fight together to end the volcanic threat, and once it is beaten, the Sylvar Eternis flies the airship to the Cloud Forest to witness the birth of its Child.

The main story of the game now completed, the player character is now able to use their own airship to take part in Exploration Mode, the endgame system of MH: Evolve that involves exploring islands with their own unique monsters and materials and using these materials to craft decorations. Permits for exploration are granted by performing hunts of story monsters and completing certain criteria (eg 'all parts broken' or 'x number of hunts total')

As well as several islands accessible in Exploration Mode. These islands are typically slightly smaller than a full zone, but have their own unique monsters and endemic life. Some are listed in the arena section instead, as they are designed as stages in which to fight larger siege monsters (e.g Tarmuck Island for Gogmazios)

I have no doubt that Evolve took some measure of inspiration from Monster Hunter as a series when crafting this kind of gameplay in the first place, but as we know, despite teams of hunters tracking giant monsters, and the combat loop feeling somewhat the same, the two games are vastly different experiences because their core structure.

Monster Hunter World is a single player/co-op game that has you hunting through sprawling worlds completing a story campaign by killing AI-controlled monsters. Evolve is a unique sort of PvP title instead, pitting four player hunters versus a player-controlled monster in relatively short rounds.

And yet I still found the actual gameplay of Evolve really fun, and I find myself wondering if this could have worked if they copied Monster Hunter outright, and made this a PvE looter instead of a PvP title.

I highly doubt it will be Evolve or Turtle Rock itself. That series tried to reinvent itself a bunch of times, and ultimately failed, and I think the name will only conjure up negative memories at this point. But for a studio to do something like both Evolve and Monster Hunter, combining the best parts of each of them, I think that could be something pretty special.

Evolve was Turtle Rock Studios' first major project after the company split from Valve in 2010. The concept for Evolve existed prior to the development of their previous game, Left 4 Dead. Inspired by hunting games such as Cabela's Big Game Hunter and Deer Hunter, the idea is to have prey that can strike back at the hunters. The monster design was originally intended to be esoteric but was later toned down. Turtle Rock found difficulty when seeking publishers that could provide funding and marketing for the game. THQ was originally set to serve as the game's publisher, but the rights to the franchise and publishing duties were transferred to Take-Two Interactive after THQ filed for bankruptcy in late 2012.

Prior to release, Evolve received a largely positive reception and won the Best of Show Awards at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014 and Gamescom 2014. Upon release, the game received positive reviews from critics, with praise mostly directed to the game's asymmetrical structure, controls, and designs. However, it received criticism for its progression system and light narrative, gameplay, as well as a large amount of downloadable content prepared. Evolve was a commercial success, although the player base significantly dwindled shortly after release. The game had briefly transitioned to become a free-to-play title known as Evolve Stage 2 before 2K Games shut down the game's dedicated servers in September 2018.

The game is set in a fictional future where humans have successfully discovered ways to survive outside Earth and have begun colonizing other planets. Humans arrived at Shear, a distant planet located in the "Far Arm" of space, and began creating colonies and industrial factories.

As the colonisation progressed, humans began to meet resistance from alien life-forms, known as Monsters, that had the ability to evolve by consuming local wildlife. As the Monsters destroyed the colonies on Shear, a former "planet tamer" named William Cabot was brought out of retirement to deal with the threat and to evacuate the remaining colonists from Shear. Cabot assembled a team of Hunters to eliminate the Monsters and protect their communities.[1]

Evolve is an action video game with a focus on both co-operative, and competitive, multiplayer gameplay. The game adapts a '4v1' asymmetrical structure where four players take control of the Hunters, while the fifth player controls the Monster.[2] The Hunters' main objective is to track and hunt the Monster in a limited amount of time, while the Monster's goal is to evolve and make themselves more powerful.[1]

In the beginning of a match, a 30-second headstart is given to the Monster so that they can have enough time to escape before the Hunters parachute from a plane to where the Monster started. Each map features an open world environment for players to explore and play within.[3] To help the Hunters navigate the environments quickly, they are equipped with jetpacks, allowing them to jump over obstacles and cliffs. The jetpack can also be used to dodge attacks performed by the monster, though it consumes a Hunter's energy.[4] The team can track the monster, as well as place waypoints on an interactive map.[5] The color of these waypoints are different based on what players have marked. The waypoint mark turns yellow for environment, orange for wildlife or red for the Monster.[6]
