Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi (Once there was a queen) is a 2017 Hindi language biopic directed by Gul Bahar Singh starring Hema Malini, who portrays Vijaya Raje Scindia, the Rajmata of Gwalior and a prominent political leader. The film is based on Mridula Sinha's biography novel Rajpath se Lokhpath par (From the royal path to the public path), and traces her journey from palace to the public.
The film depicts the challenges and struggles faced by Vijaya Raje Scindia after the merger of the princely states with the Indian Union after Independence. She had to cope with the loss of her husband, Maharaja Jivaji Rao Scindia, played by Vinod Khanna, who died prematurely leaving her at the mercy of a political party. She also had to deal with the ideological differences with her son, Madhorao Scindia, played by Rajesh Shringarpore, who joined hands with those who brought hardship to the people.
The film showcases how Vijaya Raje Scindia never compromised with her faith and values, and became the mother of millions of propagating love. She was a symbol of righteousness, modesty, idealism and courage. She was also one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a mentor to many leaders.
Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi is a tribute to the legacy of Vijaya Raje Scindia, who inspired generations of women and men with her life and vision. The film was released in theatres on 21 April 2017, and premiered on television on Zee Classic on 6 May 2017. The film was also shown in the 49th International Film Festival of India in Goa.
The film also highlights the achievements and contributions of Vijaya Raje Scindia in various fields, such as education, health, culture, women empowerment and social welfare. She was instrumental in establishing several institutions, such as the Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya, the Jiwaji University, the Cancer Hospital and Research Institute, the Laxmi Bai National Institute of Physical Education and the Madhav Institute of Technology and Science in Gwalior. She also supported various cultural and religious activities, such as the Gwalior Trade Fair, the Tansen Music Festival, the Gwalior Fort Light and Sound Show and the restoration of temples and monuments.
Vijaya Raje Scindia was also a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one of the founding members of the party. She served as the vice president of the party from 1980 to 1998 and was a mentor to many leaders, such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, Narendra Modi and Shivraj Singh Chouhan. She was also a staunch supporter of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and participated in several rallies and campaigns for the cause.
Vijaya Raje Scindia passed away on 25 January 2001 at the age of 81 in New Delhi. She was cremated with full state honours at Gwalior. She is remembered as a visionary leader, a devoted mother, a benevolent queen and a Rajmata of Gwalior and India.
