Itwas the monasteries that had held and had developed the knowledge of herbal remedies for centuries. During those times, nuns and monks were practically the only ones who took care of the sick, the needy and the weak. In them, they recognized the suffering Christ. Even St. Benedict, the founding father of Western monasticism, wrote in his Rule that "The care for the ill must come before all other duties". At the time, this was considered revolutionary thinking, because the pagan society despised those who were weak or unwell.
The knowledge of classical languages allowed the monks to build on the understanding already gained by the famous healers of antiquity: Hippocrates, Asclepius, Dioscorides, Galen and many more. Their images can be seen in the frescoes of the Old Pharmacy. Monasteries bore the creation of medicinal work such as Oda Magdunensia, a poem written by a Benedictine monk that explains the use of eighty medicinal herbs; Hortulus by the monk Walahfried Strab in which he describes the plants he grows in his garden for medical purposes. There are also copies of writings by St. Hildegard of Bingen, who lived in the monastery Rupertsberg near Rhine. Allegedly, she received visions regarding useful medicinal herbs and their use. With the development of lay pharmaceutical schools and the increasing use of synthetic medicine the monastic medicine started to recede and in some places, it disappeared completely. The same happened in Olimje after the Paulines' departure.
Today's visitors were not fully satisfied by merely observing the heritage of the monastery but wished that the friars would devote their attention to the quest for health in "God's pharmacy". Hence we, the Friars Minor Conventual of St. Francis of Assisi have complied with their wishes and revived the practice of the medicinal garden and are happy to offer an array of homemade herbal infusions, tinctures, ointments and various other remedies.
The infinitely merciful God has given us the human body using which we can elevate ourselves spiritually. He gives us fruits, vegetables, rice, grains and so much more to sustain the body. But do you know that God provides us with a most amazing pharmacy also? Yes, He does. This pharmacy is called Nature.
There were many practices we followed in daily life as I was growing up in India. Back then, the benefits of these practices were not known to me. Now the entire world has started understanding the merits of natural remedies.
Coconut oil has a huge fan gathering in the world today. We would put coconut oil in the hair to make it healthy and shiny. In the winter months the oil would solidify. To thaw it out we would put it out in the sun and apply it to the hair while basking in the sunlight.
Fennel seeds are a natural breath freshener and a digestive. Boiling these fragrant seeds in water and consuming this herbal tea cools the stomach. Ginger was a must in every household for its excellent qualities, as was turmeric powder. These two are still mainstays in the Indian kitchen.
One of the divine laws is that we must not be judgmental toward others. Another is to see the good in everyone. How can anyone profess to be holy yet judge others harshly? A holy person does not see the faults of others, only the virtues. He does not engage in backbiting and cruel behavior. He does not tolerate gossip, let alone spread it. He may not ever talk about compassion, empathy, service, tolerance, and generosity, but he practices them every day.
Following this practice will benefit you in two ways. First benefit is that your chores will no longer be dreary. Second benefit is that while you may be externally washing, cleaning, cooking, sweeping and mopping, internally you will be practicing devotion all day long.
Scriptures state repeatedly that guidance of a divine teacher is necessary for one who wishes to live a purposeful life and who wishes to know God. Such a teacher is known as the Guru. A Guru possesses theoretical knowledge of all the scriptures and a practical experience of God.
Although a Guru descends to earth for the sake of everyone, not everyone is attracted towards a Guru. Some are immediately attracted, while others take their time. Some may need coaxing and prodding, while many even criticize these divine teachers. History bears evidence to this fact. We have nailed such saints to the cross, poisoned them, maligned them and incarcerated them.
However, a Guru is a well-wisher for the entire world because he is completely selfless. After attaining God, there is nothing remaining for him to attain. This makes him absolutely selfless. All his efforts and actions are solely for the sake of humanity.
It is for this reason that each and every soul who genuinely associates with the Guru benefits from his divine association. Just as iron is turned into gold if it comes in touch with gold, so even the most wicked person is reformed if he follows the instructions of the Guru with complete faith. There is a difference, however, between the touchstone and the Guru. While the touchstone converts iron into gold, a Guru in the form of a touchstone converts iron in the form of a disciple into touchstone in the form of a saint.
Michael began his love for science at an early age, and the influence of his high school biology teacher, who was also a retired pharmacist. He opened his eyes to the beauty of a pharmacy career. Pursuing a faith-based Christian education was a main priority when choosing TFC four years ago, and in his time as a student, Michael has also taken on the role of teammate and Treasurer of the TriBeta Society. These opportunities taught him the importance of working with others, making decisions under pressure, and developing skills in communication and leadership.

The Global Mission Health Conference (GMHC), was an incredible experience again this year. This was my second time attending GMHC with our pharmacy students, and seeing the benefits of the conference each year is a blessing. Cedarville University has a vast presence at this conference, with many healthcare undergraduate and graduate students in attendance. In particular, the School of Pharmacy sends out our entire first-year pharmacy students to the conference each year. I have also had the privilege of connecting with alumni while at this conference. Gathering with like-minded believers who all have a heart to make a kingdom impact by using their gifts as healthcare professionals and students is something so powerful.
The Cedarville University School of Pharmacy is equipping students through pharmacy excellence and Christlike compassion to meet this increasing demand. Students learn from and are mentored by professors who are highly credentialed, experienced, and godly pharmacists.
Cedarville University is equipping healthcare professionals who bring outstanding skill and compassionate care into their practice for Kingdom impact. This focus finds a partner in the Global Missions Health Conference (GMHC), which more than 100 Cedarville students attend annually. The conference inspires and informs Cedarville students about God's missional work around the world and the myriad of opportunities to use a healthcare profession as a platform for Gospel ministry.
