TheFIFA World Player of the Year was an association football award presented annually by the sport's governing body, FIFA, between 1991 and 2015 at the FIFA World Player Gala. Coaches and captains of international teams and media representatives selected the player they deem to have performed the best in the previous calendar year.
Originally a single award for the world's best men's player, parallel awards for men and women were awarded from 2001 to 2009. The men's award was subsumed into the FIFA Ballon d'Or in 2010 while the women's award remained until 2015. After 2015 both men's and women's awards became part of The Best FIFA Football Awards.
The winners are chosen by the coaches and captains of national teams as well as by international media representatives invited by FIFA.[8] In a voting system based on positional voting, each voter is allotted three votes, worth five points, three points and one point, and the three finalists are ordered based on total number of points. Following criticism from some sections of the media over nominations in previous years, FIFA has since 2004 provided shortlists from which its voters can select their choices.[9]
From 2010 to 2015, the award was merged with the Ballon d'Or to become the FIFA Ballon d'Or in a six-year partnership with France Football. In 2016, FIFA rebranded the award as The Best FIFA Men's Player.
A single article from the Portuguese magazine A Bola reporting about the 1992 award mentions the former award winners Lothar Matthus in 1991, but also Diego Maradona in 1990. There is no other evidence of the award being presented by FIFA prior to 1991.[10]
I'm about to start developing a sidescrolling game where the player's goal is to travel as far as he can in the horizontal axis before touching down. Note that I do not need to ever travel back on the horizontal axis.
Before starting, I need to decide on something important: should I use the world around the player to simulate movement or actually move the player and follow him with the camera features of the game engine?
Both approaches seems to have different strengths and fallbacks, so I don't know which one is considered best. For example, what would make it easier to add power ups along the way and have a nice animated background?
Move the camera (attached to your player). I would imagine that your world has multiple objects such as enemies. If you went with moving the world, you would have to loop through all these objects to update their positions every time the world moved.
If you move the player, and attach the camera to the player then there is minimal resource usage. The game will get to its render phase, loop through everything once like it does every frame, and draw them at position - camera.position. Camera position would always equal your players position in this case.
At the end of the day, it depends on the project. If someone is making an original Mario clone, moving the world could be complicated, while moving the player doesn't really create many problems. Wanting to make a huge open-world game though, it may be better to move the world instead.
A second memorable rugby showcase in as many nights brought honours for some of the players and coaches who have shone at Rugby World Cup 2023, alongside others who have made an impact over the past 12 months or the course of distinguished careers.
Five Rugby World Cup legends were also inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame during the ceremony in Dan Carter (New Zealand), Thierry Dusautoir (France), George Smith (Australia), Juan Martn Hernndez (Argentina) and Bryan Habana (South Africa).
Savea said: "It's very special. Very blessed and grateful to be up here. I guess for an individual to stand out it's based on the foundation of the team. A massive shout-out to Foz (Ian Foster), skip (captain, Sam Cane) and my brothers this year and the last couple of years, and the journey we've been through.
"I wouldn't say I'm in the same category as those guys (previous winners of the award from New Zealand) - they're legends, but I just try and go out there, fulfil the black jersey and give my best. That's all I can do and I have 14 other brothers next to me doing the same thing.
"What this team has been through not only this year but the past couple of years under Foz has been very special and we would have loved the fairy tale ending last night. It wasn't meant to be but it's a special group of men and I'm so blessed to be able to represent the All Blacks."
Ardie Savea may have narrowly failed to join his brother Julian as a Rugby World Cup winner, but the number eight has been the standout performer for the All Blacks in 2023, starting all bar one of New Zealand's 12 tests and six at France 2023. The 30-year-old's tireless work-rate often makes it appear there is more than one of him on the pitch and his try-scoring performance in the quarter-final defeat of Ireland was one for the ages as New Zealand stunned the world number one side.
Andy Farrell claims the coveted award at the second time of asking having also been nominated in 2022. The former England international has created an environment where players can thrive, and the rewards can be seen in his taking Ireland to number one in the rankings and masterminding a Six Nations Grand Slam amid a record 16-match winning streak that only came to an end with a painful defeat to New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup 2023 quarter-finals.
Tyla Nathan-Wong has been at the heart of the Black Ferns Sevens success story since the beginning, playing in the inaugural World Rugby Sevens Series tournament in 2012 and pulling the strings as the playmaker ever since. She played in all seven tournaments on the 2023 Series, scoring 247 points as the Black Ferns Sevens reached every final, winning six titles to claim a seventh overall crown. She made the HSBC Series Dream Team and sits second on the all-time point-scoring list with 1,295.
The former Georgian Rugby Union president has worked tirelessly and diligently to help the growth and development of rugby, not only in Georgia but across Europe with his work as a Board Member for Rugby Europe. His work helped to lay the foundations for the success Georgia continue to enjoy on the international stage. Nijaradze also became the first Georgia representative to the World Rugby Council in 2016.
Well, it turns out I wasn't the only person who had a hankering for returning to Monster Hunter: World for the first time in forever this holiday season. The game has seen a resurgence over the last couple of weeks, culminating in a peak concurrent count of 131,964 players on January 1 according to SteamDB. That's the largest number of hunters exploring the New World since October 2020.
It was the 12th most played game on New Year's Day, drawing in more folk than games like Rust, The Finals, Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077. Not too bad for a game that was released in 2018, if you ask me.
It's interesting to note that Monster Hunter Rise, the newest entry in the series which is also less than $15 right now, hasn't quite been privy to the same phenomenon. It's seen a tiny boost from around 15,000 concurrent players to 27,266 players at the beginning of this year. The attention is very much on World, though, which makes sense considering it's a far more involved game than the comparatively pared-down Nintendo Switch-centric Rise. Couple that with the fact that Wilds is essentially looking to be Monster Hunter: World 2, and it's understandable why it's the returning game of choice for many.
I've personally been having a fantastic time back in Monster Hunter: World with my pals, who've been helping me finally get through the last bit of Iceborne. It's a riot of a game, especially in co-op, and still holds up as my favourite Monster Hunter five-and-a-half years later. There's nothing quite like bashing a giant monster's head with a giant bagpipe weapon before shredding out a song to buff your teammates. Just like everyone else right now, I'll be putting plenty more hours in while anticipating Wilds' release in 2025.

The FIFA World Player of the Year award is given annually to the football player who is voted as the best in the world. Here are all the award winners since 1991. Since 2004 the voting process is based on a shortlist of 35 players produced by FIFA, from which team captains, national team managers and select journalists vote for the winner.
From 2010 until 2015, the FIFA player of the year award was merged with the Ballon d'Or and called the FIFA Ballon d'Or. Compare this list to the player of the year according to World Soccer magazine, and also the female player of the year.
