Apart from the obvious "be polite, respect each other, keep it civil", there are also a few basic things that I value a lot and which are not difficult to do, but have a big positive effect. They are common practice on most mailing lists.

1. Please do not quote entire messages when you are only replying to a short part of it. Trim your quote(s) accordingly. This makes it much easier to see where your answer is, and it removes unnecessary clutter from the thread. A big favor to everyone involved.

2. Please place your answers to quotes below that which you are quoting, no top-posting. Otherwise it's more than awkward for others to trim your message later. Besides, nobody likes to read from bottom to top. Top-posting has the annoying effect that it's really hard to tell what exactly you're responding to, especially when you're answering a long post by someone else. (See the first point.)
