ThePocket WiFi is a portable device, which can simultaneously connect to 5 mobile devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops. Once you have the device, the only thing you need to do is turn on the WiFi switch and you will immediately have access to high-speed internet connection, without having to worry about cables, sockets or antennas.

The small device can fit anywhere, even in your pocket. This means that if you decide to go for a walk, without any hand luggage, you will not need to worry about whether or not you will be able to stay connected.

Whether you want to use Google Maps to figure out the best route to your next stop, get in touch with your travel companions (and your family abroad) or use a translation app, having quick and reliable internet access is a life-saver.

When you order your Pocket WiFi online, you will be asked when and how you want it delivered. You can choose to pick it up at your arrival airport or at your hotel in Japan. Check out our instructions in PDF to see the pick-up locations.

Once your trip is over you return the WiFi device via the pre-paid envelope, which you receive with the device. You should mail the envelope in any Japanese post office or post box before your departure from Japan.

Note: This comparison table is a round-up of the main Japan wifi rentals mentioned in the article; a number of different wifi packages are available through each provider, with different prices, speeds and conditions. Prices tend to decrease with the length of the trip; longer rentals generally get better rates.

Our criteria: To work out the travel wifi plans that have the best value, we looked at pricing for five days, plus speed and data allowances, as well as English-language customer support. We used similar criteria across the categories below.

It depends on your budget and needs (e.g. will you need a Japanese phone number for your stay?). We usually recommend both a wifi router and SIM, for maximum connectivity, but if you can only choose one, and you need lots of data for lots of devices, a pocket wifi router might better meet your travel needs.

While we do our best to ensure the information here is correct, it is subject to change. Note that exceeding data limits could, in addition to seeing speeds slow, result in a temporary suspension of service. Check all prices and T&Cs carefully with the provider before ordering your pocket wifi router. Post regularly updated. Last update: June 4th, 2024, by Shyam Bhardwa.

When traveling to Japan, it's important to stay connected with family and friends, or keep up with work and other obligations. Japan has some of the world's fastest and most reliable mobile networks, making it easy to stay connected and make voice calls. However, WiFi access is not as common as in some other countries, even in Tokyo city or a International Airports, and its speed can be highly dependent on the number of people connected to a hotspot. If you want to stay connected 24/7 during your trip and avoid expensive roaming fees, our Pocket WiFi is the perfect solution.

A Pocket WiFi lets you communicate with friends and family back home, use online maps to navigate, research attractions and restaurants, and even translate Japanese text or have real-time conversations using translation apps on your mobile device. Please check the closing time of the counter, taking into account the time between when your flight lands and the moment you pick up your luggage (allow about 1 hour).

We will inform you of the exact pick up counter by email, a few days before the rental start date - the location will depend on your arrival flight terminal and time.

We kindly remind all of our customers that the Pocket Wi-Fi must be returned by noon on the day after your rental end date. It should be enclosed in the pre-paid and pre-addressed envelope that came with your rental.

Please gather the Pocket Wi-Fi and all of its accessories (cable, adapter, carry case...), seal the envelope and post it in any mailbox. You can also send it directly from the airport before going through security gate (a red mailbox is located near the security checkpoints).

A reminder will be sent to you within 5 days of the scheduled return date, followed by a second reminder 5 days later. If no device is received within 15 days, we reserve the right to debit your credit card for the amount due.

Your can order your pocket directly from this page and select whether you want your Pocket WiFi to be delivered at your airport of arrival or at your hotel. You can drop it off in any post box across Japan using the shipping envelope that comes with your rental.

Depending on your usage and the service you desire, other options are available for you to access Internet. A good alternative is to order a SIM card for Japan. You can insert this SIM in your phone or other mobile device and have access to the Internet just as you would have in your own country. These devices provide a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that you can carry with you and connect to multiple devices. Alternatively, you can also buy an eSIM card.

Choosing airport delivery allows you to benefit from a Wi-Fi connection on your way to the hotel. However, delivery to the hotel is safer as the reception receives your Pocket Wifi before your arrival and gives it to you directly at check-in. If you are staying in a house or an Airbnb, we advise you to choose airport delivery instead.
