Subject: [itfc] The View from Churchmans
Ipswich Town 0 Crystal Palace 1
A continuation of everything which was wrong on Tuesday night, but
this time against a more challenging side and with the almost
inevitable result. Palace had the best record of any visiting side at
Portman Road over the past decade even before this match, and now
they’ve probably been moved up in to the “bogey team” category here.
Town seemed uninspired, and just couldn’t put a sustained period of
pressure together, with the main problem possibly being the one part
of the starting lineup which wasn’t missing any regulars – the
midfield. With four central midfielders, there was never going to be a
problem with them holding their own in terms of general involvement,
but with the exception of Bowyer’s constant support of Cresswell,
their performances all seemed to be a bit aimless. I doubt anyone in
the stands has the answer to what’s gone amiss this week, but let’s
hope the manager can get things back on track.
Overall Town performance:
4/10 – The effort was there, but it was all desperately in need of
some inspiration
Opposition quality:
7/10 – Well drilled, quick and kept Town well pinned back throughout
Referee:
7/10 – Refreshingly refused to be drawn into penalising the sort of
trivial stuff which so many referees irritate us by falling for
Match excitement:
5/10 – Although never boring, there wasn’t too much to get worked up about
Opposition supporters:
9/10 – Decent turnout, consistently noisy, and had genuinely great fun
when they scored
Player ratings, as ever 1 to 5 for each of effort/achievement…
STOCKDALE 7 (4/3) commanded his area well, and seemed to have got over
the distribution problems from the other night, although he could have
got the ball away more quickly on occasions.
EDWARDS 7 (4/3) did well under difficult circumstances, managing to
get forward a lot despite being under constant pressure at the back;
DELANEY 6 (3/3) concentrated well and didn’t do anything daft; COLLINS
7 (4/3) worked hard and defended well; and CRESSWELL 5 (2/3) had a
reasonable game until idiotically getting himself sent off.
BULLARD 4 (2/2) was completely out of sorts; ANDREWS 5 (3/2) seemed to
put in the effort, without managing to make anything really happen;
BOWYER 6 (3/3) kept his head down and did a decently solid job; but
LEADBITTER 5 (3/2) completed an ineffective and uninspired midfield.
ELLINGTON 4 (2/2) seemed to jog around brightly enough, but really
didn’t contribute; and EMMANUEL-THOMAS 6 (4/2), although also rather
ineffective, did at least seem to be trying to make an impact.
Substitutes: INGIMARSSON worked really hard to ensure that first and
foremost he didn’t make any mistakes, and succeeded; CHOPRA struggled
to worry the opposing defence much; and SCOTLAND also failed to make
any real impression.
